View Full Version : Hands Woodturning Event in SA

Turn SA is the resurrected version of SATurn which had to fold this year.

The event will be held on weekend of 22 - 24 August at Lucindale SA.

This event needs your support.

SATurn was a wonderful hands event like Turnaround Downunder and Grampians U Turn so there is no reason why this one will be any different.

Ray and Heather Cottee have been good enough to get this event going so if you would like to go contact them via email on: [email protected]

I'll be there, along with Carrolls and a host of others worth catching up with:D

PLEASE SUPPORT THIS EVENT

Well I am heading towards Turn SA, I leave this weekend and take the slow route via ????? :U

I have emailed Ray a few times without reply so I can only hope there is still room for my little set-up

I believe a few people from the Western Wood Working Club in Adelaide are going, but I don't think I'll be one of them this year

There should be a big SA turnout as it is only just down the road for them, there is an advantage for Victorians as it is closer

As a newcomer to turning, I've never been to one of these events. Are they displays and/or demos or are visitors able to turn there?

All these turnaround events are where guys bring along their lathes, tools etc , set themselves up for a weekend of turning, chatting , eating, socialising etc, go home sunday evening completely shattered as they have been busier than they usually would be at home.

Days for some start at day break and finish when someone says it is time to turn the lights out.

They are generally a closed event due to insurance issues, so if not registered you may not be able to visit

A great weekend to see what others are doing , learn some new techniques and generally have a good time. There is always someone willing to help where needed

Can you still attend without a lathe for a look see?

Can you still attend without a lathe for a look see?

Usually yes, just you pay like everyone else, but you can sometimes get to use someone else's lathe.

ps the local event to you similar to TurnSA is Q-Turn, held at Lake Moogerah 3rd week in June. It is run by the Ipswich club, and the strange thing is that the Gold Coast club is the closest, but I am the only one that has attended

Let's see if we can't change that for next year..

So, I popped in and was duly impressed. A lot of guys strutting their stuff. Learn't a bit and met a few great blokes. Will try to get to the full event next year.

All over and everyone had a great time. My first TurnSA (I didn't make it to SATurn either) and it was great. The shed was MASSIVE so plenty of room to spread out and all with a level slab and plenty of 15amp power points. The shed was so large we could drive in, unpack and set up, then do a u-turn within the shed to leave. Some even camped down the back of the shed :U.

Big thanks to organisers :2tsup:

Don't ask for name, I haven't got a clue, but here are some pics (not mine), may take a few posts

Each of these events has its own flavour or style that helps to make it unique. TurnSA was no different with the town of Lucindale getting behind the event to make it a great success. A huge thanks goes out to the generous people of this town and to Ray and Heather Cottee for taking on the job of rekindling SATurn. We also need to acknowledge the Murrayland Turners who made sure the event could be insured.
I had a wonderful time and encourage you to come along next year to help make TurnSA an even better event. There's plenty of room:D
Lucindale is well positioned to be not too far to a number of Western Vic towns so it would be great to see the Vics outnumber the South Aussies.
And don't forget Grampians U Turn next year in early MAY.

Thanks you for the photos.

I have not been to South Australia Turning events but some items and images in the photos are familiar.

Crikey, you need a scooter to get from one end of the shed to the other!:) We would love a shed like that at Prossy.

For an event like this it is great.

between each main upright there is 3 power points and hanging from the centre of each gable is another lead so could quite easily handle a lot of machinery, plenty of room to move around and the floor was flat as a tack so no need to pack the lathes to get level.

Drive in access from both ends and sides.

Hi as a travelling nomad I wish to be able to attend some events as a spectator and perhaps to turn if I have my lathe on board.
It would be great for a thread with instructions for events such as UTurn events etc such as the Grampian one as I am trying to plan to attend next year.
What we need is directions such as addresses and or GPS bearings so we can plan when we are from another state or even not familiar with local areas and not connected to the club etc.
Regards
Brian

I, and a lot of others there, have a Woodfast Midi. The variable speed is best but the old belt 5 speed is pretty good too.

Thank you David.
I am planning to get to the event and I am organising my travels to be in the area.
if possible I will bring my lathe even though it is only a small one that I travel with but I still get a kick out of turning from wood I find in the rest stops etc.
I have added to my calendars.

Brian
