View Full Version : Proserpine Turnout

powderpost

Lately I have been hearing rumors that the Proserpine Turnout is not happening this year and that it may be the end of an era. I rang Con in Proserpine to see what was happening. Con tells me that he has become involved in another activity that unfortunately clashes with the timing of Turnout and has had to cancel Turnout for this year. but he did say that Turnout will run again next year.

Had heard the same rumour but it's good to have it confirmed. Shame though - I had a good chance of making it there this year :C

Not good news at all. CJ and the Prossy crew have done a stirling job over the years. It has been a joy and an honor to have participated in the event and to have rubbed bevels with some great turners there.

Hope the Brisbane boys have been notified & the grapevine is working well. I have heard rumblings are afoot to save it this year but I am yet to hear of anything being confirmed.

Thats a bummer, :oo: as I am going to be in Aus this year, I had started getting out a stack of timber for the great raffle, that hopefully Marilyn was going to help me run again.
lets hope something changes,

Hey Geoff the rumbles are true. The Mackay club are currently kicking around the idea and weighing up the numbers to run the Turnout in CJ's absence and then pass it back next year.

Early days so keep fingers crossed.

Righty Ho!
I know this might ruffle a few feathers.
But for the sake of argument and hopefully (heated discussion),
Who really cares about woodturning?
I know I do, and I will bet most other folk reading this forum do too.
Perhaps the occasional individual out there who collects pieces by the "big names in woodturning" will do too.
However, woodturning is a pretty underground occupation these days.
I have not seen any "World Cup" woodturning titles on offer lately, or Olympic Gold Meadals in woodturning to boot on offer.
Any suggestions as to how to make woodturning seem irresistible to the masses is what I'd like to hear....... So that woodturning shows like the one in Proserpine flourish.......not die.

Maybe this should be the start of a new thread rather than be placed under the Prossy post?

Hi all,
The Mackay club is going to run it, Dave Dresscher was here on the weekend with some flyer's advertising it. Just need someone from the Mackay club to post a link to the entry form now.
As in previous years I will donate a heap of different timber blanks for the super raffle for a bit of fun and we just need Marilyn to help me run it. For anyone that has not been before let's hope she makes it, if only for her jokes. :2tsup::2tsup:

The Proserpine Turnout is a pre-registration event with the Mackay Woodturners Association temporarily hosting the event this year. The event is held outside Proserpine near Peter Faust dam at the Lions Camp Kanga. Best to get in touch with the Mackay club to register prior to the event or contact David Drescher at SE Qld Woodworking Supplies as I believe he has copies of the flyer. Sorry I don't have a PDF version otherwise I would PM it.

Sorry, thanked the wrong post - shouldda been dai sensei! Not that there was anything wrong with the "Envious" post, because I would have to agree with that.

For what looked like being a non-event, it looks to have worked out pretty well. Congrats to those involved.

Looks like we should plan on being there next year. Mrs Big A does quilting/patchwork so there would be an interest for her, and I would like to go to one of these events to see what they are like.

Prossy is just up the road a bit from Rocky - probably a 2 day drive with the caravan.

Here are the things i made whilst here:-

Small mystery burl natural edge bowl (narrowed down to either a sub species of Red Mallee, Red Morrel, or Western Myall - from Ceduna SA). A few coats of NCL but I ran out, so still to rub down and recoat.
330049 330050 330051 330052

Some miniatures from Yellow Box and Queen Ebony (sitting on 5c piece for scale). Photos also show set-up as I use a led light/magnifying glass (taped to screen as it kept sagging on to chuck :o)

330048 330058 330056 330055

Lastly a green ant made from a scrap piece of Mango - everyone gets a piece to make something from. I've made similar ants at Q-turn but from rosewood, not highly figured soft Mango, the legs were a real test

Most of the young ones are tied up with work and family.

They are a great weekend for socialising, sharing ideas and generally being over fed.

I have children and nieces in their forties. What with raising children, children's dance, music, sports, birthday parties, etc, volunteering at school, working outside the home, keeping up with housework, etc., etc., it is a wonder the parents work in a full nights sleep.

We had boy - girl twins. As I think back I don't remember much free time. I was a self employed photographer and worked on a series of old below market houses we owned and lived in. Home repair was a hobby of sorts. As was keeping alive the older vehicles we owned.

I did not start turning until my middle to late 60s.

The nicest thing about being retired is having free time. It is so nice to not have to be somewhere on a schedule every day.

Ho Hum, another dull and boring Prossie Turnout where I was forced to watch and learn from some of the most talented woodturners on earth who show and share all their techniques and skills without reservation.:2tsup::2tsup::2tsup::2tsup:
Meeting Neil and watching him work was a real eyeopener for me, and checking everyones home made/modified tools to do some extraordinary work is a bonus. As for the age of the participants, the photos so far did not capture the younger ones, but as other posters have said, they are trying to do other stuff. I won a nice blank of timber i have never seen before, so that was a plus from the super raffle, and i gained a few kilo's from the superb food.
All in all, a very well organised, well run event, just hope I am here for next year.

Over 50? All 21 at heart :U and a great bunch of friends to catch up with again. Not exactly sure but from early to mid thirties (how old is Troy??) to 90 yo represented in this years group. Last couple of years we have had from early 20's up to 89.

A very good weekend - great company; great food thanks to Kay & her merry helpers; great barman - thanks Ray; and a very well run event all up. Its a pity we only have it once a year as there is just so much to learn and watch under the big top.

Easier to show in person than describe :-. I start with a 6mm sq blank held with pin jaws in the Vicmarc chuck and use a cone live centre in the tailstock at the blunt end. I turn them round with a ball at the headstock end. Done very carefully with very sharp small skew or detail gouge and steady hand. Sand and finish before parting off. The cone centre makes a matching hole that then can be fitted against the ball and glued in place.

Mango is not a timber to learn on, it was a PITA, ebony or any other very fine straight grained timber is best. To make the 18 leg parts I actually started with 57 blanks for this one, fiddle or twisted grain soon put an end to the others :-

Hi Smiife, The lid is not hinged, just held open with a piece of wire. What is it used for?????? It falls into the same category as the photos or paintings hanging on a wall. The red thing inside was going to be aa rose, but the wood wasn't suitable for thin petals so it became a daisy. :o

I am also very thankful for the Mackay boys getting this years Turnout up and running. Both my wife and I look forward every year, to meeting up with distant friends. However, I think we should all get behind Con and his merry little band of men, and be grateful and thankful that they, a very small group, had the foresight and gumption to start this event. It is a demanding exercise and take a lot of time and energy to maintain enthusiasm.

I for one, have had some experiences and met some people, that I would not have had or met before. Credit to the Mackay Club, they did a sterling job, but I did miss the boys from Proserpine.

Hopefully we can all meet again next year at Camp Kanga. I will most certainly assist in any way I can.
