Hi Fred, it's an old name in w/w gear I think.

But for these $$ you could buy a Vicmarc 175 with swivel head and electronic speed control. Same bed length, slightly less swing over bed if memory serves.

speaks pretty highly of them, Ern the only problem with the 175 is that it is gutless. I have not used one all that much but even with the belt on the high torque setting moderate cuts still stop the thing. At least this lathe starts with a 1.5hp, and they do have an electronic version available at 2hp.

Of course every choice involves a trade off. I'm not a professional so I don't mind taking things at a modest pace on the 175 and I live with that for the sake of the swivel head. I rarely do pieces over 30cm but I've never stopped the thing even while weighing in with a 16mm Supagouge.

I think tho that you can get a 1.5hp motor on special order for the Vicmarc.

Ern

sorry if I sounded a bit direct in that reply, I just re read the thing and it does come off a bit strong. The few times I have used the 175 and the many times I have watched it being used has lead me to think that the base model is not what I will purchase as a next lathe. I used it cutting beads on the outside of a bowl and although the timber was not that hard (claret ash) it did slow the speed down and I was taking light cuts. By the way I actually asked Richard to show me what he meant in his description of how to cut beads on the outside of a bowl and it makes a lot more sense when you see/do it. I think that the durden seems a good solid lathe, approximately the same weight as the vicmarc but with a greater swing. I have not seen a list of the prices of this lathe and the buy now price on that ebay thing does not give any indication as to what model they are even talking about, the picture is of a 400, which comes in a couple of versions, but they make a 300, 400, 500 and I think a 600 as well. You can get a vic175 for about 3K and a vic300evs for 4500.

No problem. I'm happy with people being blunt ;-}

It gives newbies on the forum info they'd never get otherwise.

And yes, if I were Vicmarc I'd make a bigger motor standard on the 175. I reckon they'd be losing sales to the Nova DVR for this reason.

Interesting comment about beads on bowls. I figured I'd just have to find my way from the photos. Thankfully I now have a big urn style vessel in plane that just isn't working form-wise that will be the guinea pig.

Quote Rssr:"And yes, if I were Vicmarc I'd make a bigger motor standard on the 175."

Ern, I have a VL-175 with a 1.5 hp motor. I bought it as an option in June 2004, however when I spoke to Vic in December last year here in Perth he said that he could now fit a 2 hp motor as he has a different casting that takes the 2 hp available. I originally wanted a 2 hp, but got the 1.5 hp. I turn a lot on my 1.5, big bowls as well, but with sharp tools and good technique I do not have problems with it being underpowered. However it is possible to stop the lathe but not my style of turning.
As far as I am aware the VL175 already come or will shortly come with the 1.5 hp as standard. I cannot remember the launch date so it may have come and gone.
