Bob Stocksdale is one of my turning heroes:

He used a 1/2 inch bowl gouge and a scraper to make all his bowls.

Another is Rude Osolnik:

He was a scrounger of material. He found a pile of discarded Baltic Birch cupboard doors at the college and brought home a dump truck full. His wife wanted to know what he was going to do with them. He didn't know but said he would figure something out.

This is the lathe he used for years:

Five speed truck transmission & four pulley ratios makes 20 speeds forward and four reverse.

In the early 1970s I bought several of his walnut bowls for $12 - $15 - $18 and gave them away as wedding presents, etc.
