Does anyone have experience or opinion on the suitability of this unit for vacuum chucking?

Can produce too much vacuum for a vacuum chuck but ok as long as you put in a valve to vary actual vacuum used.

Thank you. I am planning to use the design by Doc Green in his book 'FIXTURES AND CHUCKS FOR WOODTURNING". It includes a vacuum guage and both bleed valve and throttle valve.

I'd like to set up one of these as well so I'm keen to hear how it works for you.
One thing I saw on Glenn Lucas' bowl turning DVD was a non-return valve set up on his vac line so if you lose power or the vacuum cuts out the piece you're working on won't fly off the lathe.

Sounds a good idea, I will have to look into it. Do you have any detail on yhe non-return valve - supplier, part #, etc?

Bob. The non return valve is called a check valve. When you lose air on the pump side the back pressure from the bowl side should close the valve. They only allow flow in one direction. Ron.

Couldn't agree with you more. My understanding is as woodturnerjosh said that it is there in case of an emergency, eg power failure, and would retain the vacuum long enough for the lathe to be switched off and the bowl removed safetly. Do you see a problem with that or do you have a better solution?

As mentioned the non-return valve should allow you to safely stop the lathe.
No supplier or part was mentioned but I would be calling Enzed, Pirtek or another hose and fitting specialist.
Something else mentioned in his video is to use filters to make sure no debris/dust gets into the pump.

Sounds like a good idea for power failure point of view. My worry was someone starting vacuum, get the vacuum needed, then turning it of but continuing to turn

Yes, I use a similar one, but mine has a 4.2cfm capacity I think
