View Full Version : WHAT IS THE VIEW FROM YOUR LATHE

chambezio
16th January 2015, 05:48 PM
I have been thinking of putting up this thread for a while.
Over the last 35 plus years my lathe has been in use, it has been set up in different places in my shed but by far when it was set against a window it always gave a nice feel to be working with sunlight and a view

The first photo I may take another tonight which will get rid of the daylight flare. The view is not bad at the moment because we have had rain to green things up. There is a creek down in the depression of the foreground. Its not running but should we get more rain it should start to run again.

Because its a bush block the spiders and there webs are a continual pain to keep them away.

Thanks for looking

G'day Rod. Great view you have mate. Sadly mines nothing like that and comes nowhere near it. I look at a tin wall and out into part of my gravel driveway and thats about it. I'm a little envious of what you have there mate.

Dave Ipswich is a nice part of the world. Take a pic and let us see. I do know that placement of some machines is dictated by other factors. As I said above, I have had mine set away from the window twice but ended up moving it to where it is now only about 18 months ago. I have also found out that walls are handy for hanging things up but I have run out of walls and so have things that need to be hung up.

Hey Dave, which lathe? Which window? The one with glass or the one without? Choices, choices...

I just happened to have the lathe out today on one of its rare appearances when I saw this thread go by on the activity stream, so I took a picture.

You can see some of my timber collection waiting to be dealt with and the herb garden along the back fence. Over the back fence it is parkland for about 4-500 metres with a watercourse through the middle so I have no back fence neighbors to worry about. Nice and peaceful.

Cheers

I have no outside view either as my workshop does not have any windows. This is because it's built underneath my house but that has the advantage of being cool in summer and warm in winter.

So no view but comfortable conditions. :2tsup::2tsup:

I assume you are referring to the laundry?

Just doing the monster laundry after two weeks camping. Open fire cooking most nights means everything smells smokey so the washing machines runs solid for a couple of days after we get home.

Thanks for your contributions. You fellas who say you have no view.... you do you know. You would have a wall (presumably) and on that wall you would have...timber storage racks or turning tool holders or....take a photo and give us a look. (I have a "nosey personality) I realise we all can't have an unobstructed view of Sydney Harbour or Olympic Park or even the Story Bridge but you do have a view of something
I enjoy looking at blokes sheds. We all do similar work but we do those jobs differently with different tools. I think we can all learn from seeing how other do what they do

snowyskiesau
17th January 2015, 05:41 PM
OK so I was wrong, it's actually a painted MDF wall, a lot flasher than fibro.
Here's the view (http://port-huon.com.au/weather/webcam/weather.jpg) I'd prefer to have but as this is taken from the roof of my shed, working on the lathe from there might be a little unsafe.

Geoff, as this thread opened, the first thing I thought when looking at the lathe with the white cover behind it, Why has he got a fossil of a Diprotodon head on the bench. It wasn't till I looked into the picture that I realised it wasn't a fossil.
Great scene from the roof, though, just the same

Wow! :o Leave the cover on the lathe while you build the second storey and don't forget the large window to position the lathe in front of. Natural light is good when turning.

Here is what I look at when I look up from the lathes, not a great view.
I had to move my bandsaw to face the door as the dog likes to come in and randomly bark at it when it's on. Bit of a safety issue the first few times he did it.

That little slab of Euc Concretus is between 760 - 860 approx by 50mm thick. I was turning it at about 200-300 rpm today and it was fluttering at >20mm thick. It's off the lathe now for sanding, as I find it safer to move around the piece on a table than have it rotate, even at 50rpm. Smiife, you can turn these :) Ray, it has some blue paint from connecting with the external tool rest, after it decided to unwind due to momentum being greater than the time allowed by the computer chip. Not one of the more pleasant experiences, but an experience all the same. I'll post some pics when I have finished it. MBGitW likes gloss, I prefer the satin finish of oil . . .

Over the last 35 plus years my lathe has been in use, it has been set up in different places in my shed but by far when it was set against a window it always gave a nice feel to be working with sunlight and a viewThat's a really nice view Rod.

I don't have a lathe, but if I did, I could make this the view:

Nothing wrong with that view, Brett. Mine may look similar on only a few days of the year.
Have you put a window in your extension?

Have you put a window in your extension?Haven't got the extension yet, but when it happens maybe just some windows at the top for light.

Brett, you mean we didn't 'turn' you to the dark side at Dave's Jerilderie GTG last year? Even Trevor (Repliconics) has been suckered... I mean introduced to the wonders of woodturning.

BTW, I hope Lola is OK,

CraigNope, I have an iron will. Trev obviously only has a wooden one :;.

Cheers Craig, the op went very well, and she could walk straight after (although gingerly at first).

Don't know why there is two photos there, but that is my house in the background. No neighbors in site.

Wet day not much/can't do outside and I had been thinking to do an update of my "View from my lathe"
Seven years later, after our 10 year drought had finished. As all over the place we are enjoying seeing what water can add to our lives helping things grow.

Our creek behind us, has had a big flow for months now. (In 40 years we have never seen so much water being carried away down stream) The channel is about 6-7 metres wide and about knee deep. I thought the thread should be updated so you can all see. The wood lathe is against the window at the end of the shed and its about 4.5 metres from shed floor level and creek level. At the left on the bank out of the picture is a very large and very old Apple Gum which is holding the bank together so the shed won't end up in the creek.

When we moved here in 1981 the creek was a string of bath sized water holes 75mm deep and you could see just see movement as it ran down hill. On old maps it had the creek name then written in brackets "Permanent Water" Then the drought came and shrunk the creek back to a dry gully for years. In the middle of last week we had about 55mm of rain one night and the creek rose to about8-900mm deep and right across for a couple of days. By that you can tell the ground is full and any new rain just runs off

That’s nice to be close to running water like that . Do you see many snakes though ? I’d be guessing you would in the warmer months . How big and what type if you do see them ?

After reading "Boringoldgeoffe Post I thought I would bring mine "up to date". I went through my Post to riminess. 2015 was the first thread. The creek shrunk back to about 450mm wide with about 50mm deep. Friday we had 23 mm over night and it swelled the creek to 600mm deep and 2000mm wide. It shows that the rain will run off due to the moisture in the ground

The view from my shed is a dark green colourbond fence and a neighbours house who refuses to talk to me.:U

Hope nothing goes wrong. Would love that view, but have had 20 odd Kg of redgum go past me - made a hole in the asbestos cement side of the shed. Then again when things break loose they tend to come your way.

With the passing of SWMBO I could now get my original view back.
SWMBO was using my original lathe bench for her lapidary work.
I've sold off all her gear but the bench is still piled high with other stuff and need to sort through it.
Not sure I will move the lathe back though - I don't use my lathe that often and it would require a heap of dust extraction rerouting etc.
The ducting would also significantly block the view

This is the view I planned to have,

If I had a window the view and light would be nice.
