Can someone explain the different purposes of a spindle gouge and spindle detail gouge. They have a different depth of flute and front angle, so obviously there are reasons for this.
Any advice appreciated.

Spindle gouge is, amongst other things, for outside spindle turning, coves and general work. The detail gouge is for detailed finer work, like finials, rolling beads etc, also good for face cutting end grain.

To sell you more tools :D

One reason the extra depth of steel in the spindle gouge makes turning coves etc a little safer when there is a significant tool overhang due to the tool rest not being able to be placed close to the work. Also reduces tool chatter.
