Makers Mark

The die to stamp my brass backs arrived. 7 tonne of hydraulic pressure was needed to achieve a clear imprint on both lines of text. Nice craftsmanship from Chalco.

I still need to make a purpose jig before I can use it for my saw making work.

Stewie, I hate to break this news to you, but what you have is an 'owner's mark", not a 'maker's mark". The Maker's Mark has a recessed background and a raised foreground (the lettering). The Owner's Mark is the opposite.

I prefer the Owner's Mark. Yours is great, so you did well. Read my link for explanation.

HAND STAMPS

Stamps can be divided into two main types

INTAGLIO Where the letters are cut into the face sunk (as in stamping coins)
INCUSE Where the face is cut in relief

Stewie, yes, that is the case, as it has been for 100s of years. But I choose not to use one like that on my tools and furniture since the force required is scary.

I've see a few saw brass backs with intaglio stamps, not very common, and as you say, you'd need a pretty big press to do it.

Hi Ray. The guy in charge is Ian Houghton

The cost of my stamp was uk $120.00 + uk $14.00 postal.

With my stamp the outer measurements are 60mm(L) x 30mm(H). The height was governed by the dia of the boss on the end of the piston rod. The 2 lines of text have a combined height of 9mm. That gives me plenty of scope to position the text so it doesn't interfere with the top edge profile of the 19mm brass back.

If you put a micro bevel on the letters you wont need as much pressure

The stamp was tested on 1.2mm brass over a hardened steel bed. It will be interesting to see if less pressure is required on 1/4" gauge brass back.
