View Full Version : Glass supports

I have been looking for hours for a supplier however I don't know what to look for so it is a little hard.

I am building a dining table with a glass top. The glass is to sit on two steel rails 1800x10mm. I am looking for a clear strip to run along the steel to provide a buffer between the glass and the steel and also prevent the glass from sliding. I have seen the small self adhesive clear dots that you put on to do as I am after however I want this same material in a strip form.

The purpose of this strip is to provide greater support for the glass as it will be supported along the entire 1800x10 steel support. If I was to use the dots then the glass will only be supported at a few points where I place the dots.

I have been to a cabinet supplier who has the dots but couldn't help with the strip.
I have been to Clarks Rubber however they could only suggest clear pipe sliced up. This wouldn't give the required non-slip grip.

Any ideas where to find the dot product in a strip form?

Thanks.

What about casting some silicon between two pieces of glass, to the desired thickness, wrapped in glad wrap so it doesn't stick. When set, peel back the glad wrap and cut into strips to suit.

I've only ever seen and used bump-ons (the little translucent stick on dots). Try Lincoln Sentry, if they don't have what you're after it probably doesn't exist. (well not as a specialised glazing supply)

Stinkalot,
I did something similar a few years ago and used black adhesive backed tape that was intended for sealing around doors. They had a whole range of widths and I used one about 15mm wide. Some of them are quite thick but the one I used was made from neoprene I think and was only about 3mm thick. The foam ones would squash down ok for you with the weight of the glass top and do a good job of spreading out the load.
cheers

Thanks all ....

I had a look on the Lincoln Sentry site and found the bump-ons .... much easier when I have a name to search for. I have emailed them to ask about a strip product.

Whilst waiting I have dug a little deeper. The bump ons are made by 3m so off to their site I go.

3m do make bump-on in a strip roll product ..... well in the states they do. I have emailed Australia 3M to see where I can purchase a small length of the roll.

I will post details here when I find something in case somebody is searching for something similar in the future.

Thanks for all of the ideas guys ....
I emailed Lincoln Sentry via their web inquiry and it bounced back.
Australia 3M emailed back with two possible local suppliers to try .......

I just have to get on the phone now. This roll stock bump on is exactly the product I was hoping that they made.

For any future generations looking for this product here is the gossip ....

The names have been changed to protect the innocent:

Lord Stinkalot,

SJ5616 Resilient Rollstock is only available firm order ex USA . Minimum order qty is one roll . Dimensions are 228mm x 914mm. Cost is $92-30 + GST.
Product is also available in 32.9 mt rolls but price is over
$2000-00 per roll.

I do not know of any 3M distributor who stocks this item and it would be unlikely any would sell less than full roll.

Regards

The helpful guy from the shop.

May be little late with this suggestion,

How about glueing the glass to the steel, use Loctite 358 adhesive (designed to glue glass/glass or glass/metal). It's UV curing so you will need to get or make a lamp, I use a UV tube in a standard fittling that is fix to a frame.

Can't see the glue once cured....great stuff.

Cheers,
Kev
