As luck would have my woodturning 'skills' (ok lets be honest, the fact that I own lathe .... or two, and various tools to go with) got out into the business world.

Cant say it will mke me rich but it will cover the power bill and. Ost of materials lol.

Anyway enough dribble! The commission - turn a jewelery peg. The specs as below.

That was out of Murray pine. Client wants blonde. Phew they settled on murray pine. I have a heap. Damn its all split.

Ok so i know where there is a lump of mystery pine. I think they said hoop. So long as it does not look like radiata

Ita a big chunk at 320 square and 600 long. And my wife has my good saws from bushmiller. This just aint gonna cut it.

Ok should update on the cut. It was hard work. Real hard. Decided to widen the kurf. W ok nt fir on the band saw and table saw .... well you can see that in an earlier pic and to make things worse im running a 9 1/4 blade in a 10" saw. Must say blades are much cheaper.

Sounds like some real fun Dave. When you do a run of items, do you use a template to follow? I usually make one out of 3mm ply or MDF and hold it against what I'm turning .

Dave, you're making me sweat looking at all that effort just to cut the blanks!

Perhaps you need to invest in a bench and get the tools off the floor :)

Get to show you how to make these. He helped me when you came up last. I make dozens in a day when the coat racks and peg boards get ordered for the stores. A template with pins and a negative are real timesavers.

My method is probably very wrong, but its fast :) Turn them between centres to rough out the stalk and head, then mount it into a contraption pictured, finish off and apply plenty of the 80 and 120 grit chisels ;) The negative is used to ensure its spot on. Not pictured is my Iron Maiden. Its just a bit of ply with nails inserted at the various cutoff points and curve tops/bottoms. The nails are clipped to points with side cutters and this is simply jammed against the prepared spindle while its rotating. The 5 nails make all the markings needed in half a second and ensures all spindles are the same.

I found using a skewchigouge is ideal.

Im at it today Evan, all the blanks are cut. Did think of doing a negative but wasnt sure if it would be worth the time for a small run.

Maybe I should do it anyway ad ive done a couple and now I can compare the two ways.

The story boards are great for this type of thing and I like the Idea with the one with the nails to mark all the points at once:2tsup:

This is the Iron Maiden. Its just the clipped nails. Each represents important (but entirely arbitrary) points where there are high/lows begins/end on the pegs.

One is made for each type of peg...

Dave I do a negative for each peg type too. I'm hopeless and very slow at turning, so taking 10 minutes to make a negative saves me 10x that at production time. I just print it out, stick it to a 3mm MDF and cut it out with a little coping saw. Its very easy to compare all the angles/slopes/curves this way.

The spanners and the bit of MDF with holes drilled in it (photo 3 above) are so I can get the diameters of each point right as well. Each spanner is 1mm bigger than the final size. This gives me room to make a final smooth cut (ahem, SAND it down to size :B )

came and did a demo at my place sometime ago on production turning. He neve did the MDF thing. I feel ripped off lol. I like that idea.

Your posts prompted me to get the shed sorted a bit for which i thank you. Also to follow through on the negative, that is something he dod not show us either. I was just using the calipers though did show us a marking rod. Don't think there were nails in that one but he did use nails for and bead and cove template.

I could not get anywhere with ease in my shed this morning. Now behold

Making steady progress. 1/2 way

So taking a breather for lunchand thiught I'd show the process. Took a little from evanism & and added a little of my own.

Made a wooden jam chuck thatscrewd straight on the spindle nd then put it on reversed live centre (what ever you call that thing, has spindle thread so you can mount your chuck on the tailstock)

Using the flat end I press it up against my blank held in the four jaw chucks. It is turned to the major diameter so no need to use calipers or spanner etc. Turn one end down amd site the other to the bed

Then just draw a straight line with whatever chisel you fancy from end to end.

Then mark a little deeper those points and round the end. Now at this point you'll notice the jamb chuck has a hollow. I also use a router bit as my negative for the dome. Cant use it as a scraper as thebtimber woukd tear and likely come flying out the jaws

Now with the tool rest set at the angle of the taper I finish shaping using a spaner as a gauge on final diameters and one set of calipers on the large end of the taper

Then sand thru to 400

All in all about 30 minutes each. I think a timber that didn't tear so easy I could likely get it down to 20 minutes of turning and sanding to get the desired finish for this job

Fostner bit on top to suit tenon. Nice snug fit so just a small smear of glue shoukd be ample.

Hope the package is opened on carpet. Hate to aee those thigs land on a hard floor. I assumed theae were to be supolied unfinished. Hope i was right lol
