Off to a very wet start but fined up beautifully today until around 2pm when a few showers crept in again. Still a great day and most of the stalls were selling plenty, especially the timber sellers, with some now below 50% and two days to go.

Thought some might enjoy some photos of some of the Wootha prize entries.

Maleny is a small town on the hinterland of the Sunshine Coast Qld. It puts on this wood show every year and IMHO the best show for sellers/buyers alike. Everything associated with timber is available, from the raw wood through to finished products and all the equipment you need along the way from milling through to fine finishing. It is run by the community raising money for the community, so seller sites are cheap, plus sellers get to stay overnight camping if they like so cheap to attend. On top of the big sellers you also get the smaller ones that specialise in certain timbers or certain craftsmanship.

The prices then reflect this and they are the best timber prices around. Dry slabs starting at $30 for silky oak and white cedar for example. A lot of those rarer species from the smaller sellers are therefore also available. Millers are demonstrating cutting then selling the slabs/boards straight off the saw even cheaper. At night a lot of the sellers group around a large fire to play instruments, tell big lies and generally relax, although it ends relatively early as another long day awaits tomorrow.

It leaves the WWW Show for dead IMHO. I'll try and take some more photos tomorrow

Smiffe, it was once a 'hippy' town but they were forced out further when the 'tree changers' started arriving. Property prices are expensive. However, the town has kept its character with its older buildings and craft shops and the close knit community has fought successfully to keep the big fast food franchises out of town. It is not a huge drive from Armidale, so if you hop in your car early in the morning you can be there easily, for Monday's bargains!

Neil provided photos of some of the exhibits for the Wootha prize. A forum member, Luke Maddox, also had an entry in that competition.

I went up there today and thought that the chainsaw maker had plenty of spare time on his hands.

Unfortunately U was once again unable to make it to Melaney thanks to OS relies!1

We took Ana's sister and her husband up there on Wednesday and they were mightily impressed with both
Melaney and Montville. Weather was against us but they enjoyed themselves.

Thanks for the photos Neil!!:2tsup::2tsup::2tsup:

Well it rained all night and looks like it has settled in for the day with thunderstorms predicted after lunch :C.

But what does that mean, just bring a brolly still the same sellers and great time, even better prices maybe :U:U

I was at the expo yesterday morning - and agreed, it's a ripper of an event! Beyond the timber and tools etc. there are plenty of stalls with good food and drinks... Or at least they looked good, I only sampled a couple.

Is it my imagination or were there a couple of extra timber sellers compared to last year, or to the Brisbane show?

The wootha prize entries are pretty much all gorgeous.

I can see that I am going to have to make an extra effort to get down there next year. Great to see our crafts being showcased!

Admittedly, I've only been to the last three, but this one, despite the bad weather, was absolutely the best. It's great to see such an excellent event not only happening, but improving!

As an exhibitor this year, I was invited to the opening ceremony, and got to learn a bit about the people behind the event, past and present, and was also shown just how important sustainable land management is to those in charge.

Here's to many more.

Cheers,
Luke

Luke Maddox had an entry in the Wootha prize, a small crows Ash table. If you are still there you might be able to get a pic. I didn't have a camera with me.

I spotted Luke's table, but also did not get a photo - I can confirm it's a very nice piece of work though!

Damn! I missed that. Where were they? Hot women and cold snakes, or is it the other way around? Sounds marvelous.

Luke. It's all down to you now with the table. Certainly worth a thread.
