Its been far too long since I did a machine so I thought I'd start with something simple to get me back into the swing of things.
I bought this a couple of years ago and its been sat under a tree.

As you can see its pretty crusty

But like most wadkin lumps they come to bits easily

Just about stripped just need to get the turning table off, not sure how to do it yet so the best option is to sleep on it.

Move over. I'll need a seat in the front row as well.
That is possibly the nicest mitre saw I have ever seen. Love the old cast iron stuff.

A little more progress. Its always a good thing to walk away when something is stuck. I gave the table a good squirt of plus gas and left it overnight. I tipped it upside down and thought I might have to press it out. Luckily it just slid out.

Usual method of removing rust, Stanley blade then brass wire wheel in a drill and the finished off with some scotchbrite on the ROS

Been wanting to use my new needle scaler for ages, it works really well at cleaning up the casting crud on the letters. My compressor is only a 2hp Sip and struggled a bit. Still easier than a dremmel

That's a lovely little Wadkin mitre saw. In fact, it's the first of that model I've seen beyond a catalogue. Do you have any plans for dust extraction, or just keep it all original? And what about lateral adjustments, is there any way of adjusting the blade, should it not be square?

Regards,
Raymond

Raymond I haven't seen this saw in a catalogue have you got a cut. There is the facility to attach a extraction hose I think I will see how good it works and if its no good I will make a hood. The saw has presets for 45 and 90. It has the same plunger as the pk table release. The fence is pinned and bolted so no adjustment there. I could always just select the angle and lock it down if the presets are worn.

I started to clean up the blade housing and its made from cast ali so should come up nice and shiny. I use various tools to get the desired finish. Wire wheel to get in the nucks, flapper disc on the grinder for removing material quickly, those sandpaper circle thingies that go in a drill ( they are really good for making the surface uniform), power file and then the ROS, I finally tried that abranet stuff and I am very impressed. Doesn't clog and lasts ages.

Just to prove this little saw had been used for cutting ali for a long time I cleaned out the extraction pipe. It was jammed solid with ali swarf/dust

I then did the other half of the blade guard

I was thinking of fixing this hole with some apoxy. I found a nice crack next to it. I'm not sure if I should try and repair it or leave alone. I cant imagine 70 year old cast aluminium would weld very well.

Drill a small hole at each end of the crack to stop it spreading.

Nice job so far. Just the casting work on the base is amazing in itself.

Welding aluminium weakens the surrounding metal.
It would look better if you squared up the edges of the hole and glued in a fitted piece of oversize aluminium which could then be filed / sanded into shape.

I got round to fixing the hole and crack. drilled holes at either end and V'd out a bit for the filler to get hold. To keep the filler in place I stuck some foil tab on the inside.

Time for some crust removal. Most things on this are pretty pitted so instead of a wire wheel I went straight for the power file and a 40 grit belt. Then went through the grits before buffing with compound.

For doing a flat object I stick various grits to some formica and sit and rub

Vann I voted out I think one of the reasons Brexit won was that people are so disillusioned at the establishment/MP's/councillors that it was just a big two fingers up at them.
Amrion I always take pictures so I know where stuff went when reassembling the more complicated machines. I wish more people would post stuff I love seeing how other people tackle stuff.
Not much progress today.

Thanks for going into the extra detail to see how you get from rusty to polished. Usually people just show before and after pickkies (not just you - but see your previous post). It's great to see it step by step - really helpful.

The pin didn't come out when I tried with a punch so I had to hacksaw it off.

http://i525.photobucket.com/albums/cc340/wallace_099/wadkin%20mitre%20saw/IMG_0231_zpszwklqp25.jpg (http://s525.photobucket.com/user/wallace_099/media/wadkin%20mitre%20saw/IMG_0231_zpszwklqp25.jpg.html)

I have the same problem with the slider lock on my PK, and wondered if I dare hacksaw the pin. What will you use for a replacement pin (i.e. what size is it)?

It had some major pits so I used my lovely 14" disc

Van I think sawing the pin was the safest method, I gave it a good wack and you know when somethings not coming out. I've had them before on a pk with a bent nail in. I was thinking of making a little brass pin with a little head on just for the bling factor. I got that disc sander a couple of years ago from foundry pattern shop. The problem is it works so keeps getting demoted down the list. I did a step by step because someone was asking what is really needed to get things done. I think there might be another 1.5hrs to finish it.

Matty I am quite lucky in some respects, when I'm not needed in the house I can pop out to my shop even for 30 mins.
The final part of this piece, everything sanded down to 1200 grit

I have decided not to shine every bolt so I have blackened a few bits. This is the stuff you mix with water and it leaves an oxidised layer, you then spray with WD40 and wax.
I used this on the RS I did but since I sold it I don't know how good this stuff resists rust.

I have been on the look out for a motor, I went to see my local motor winders to see if he had anything suitable. I had a scout round his stash and found this little gryphon motor which is 1.25 hp. Its worth a punt for £15

I had a little strange encounter when I went to get my paint mixed. The guy has mixed my paint a few times and wondered why its always the same colour. I said I was restoring an old wadkin machine. Low and behold he used make wadkins. He worked at evenwood engineering at bishop Auckland. He worked on a big grinder that did the machine tops.
I got a few coats of zinc primer on everything

I made a new one, one problem I had was the Perspex I was using was quite thick and I needed to heat it up quite a bit to achieve the bend. I ended up over doing it on a couple which causes bubbles to appear inside the stuff. In the end I just admitted defeat and will live with bubbles. I suspect my Perspex was too thick.

I had a bit of a drama with the enamel paint. I like it semi gloss but the paint guy didn't do it properly so I had to take it back and get it flattened. I then sprayed everything again and it was too shiny again. Strange thing was I gave a piece just a quick going over and it went the semi glass I wanted but where I'd laid down a few decent coats it was shiny when dry. Both sprayed at the same time. I've never experienced that before.

Your doing a fantastic job there.

I was wondering when you tried to punch that pin out if you were able to try from both sides? Could it have been a taper pin and only gone one way?

I have a concern with Perspex for the blade guard as Perspex (acrylic sheet) will shatter easily with impact from flying debris, saw dust might be fine but anything bigger could be an issue. Can you get your hands on some polycarbonate instead?

Looking forward to seeing the finished machine.

I'm not sure if the stuff I used is actually Perspex. It cut easily with a jig saw.
On the final furlong. Decent masking tape is a really good investment

Another Wadkin MS.

It seems that they never wandered far from Mother England, this one is (was) located in Bradford, UK.

If the motor tag is any indication it's probably not quite the age of Mark's (wallace). This motor is T401959Z vrs T313678Z on Mark's.

What a niffy machine! I guess when there are machines like the BRA Radial Arm Saw the use for one of these would be limited.
