There is a line by Peter Child in his book, The Craftsman Woodturner, along the line of "anyone who can use a 2 inch skew does not need to be reading this book".

If you are near a company that either uses big planers, or one that sharpens planer blades, you might could find one or more 2" X 12" high speed steel planer blades for near scrap price. Once they are sharpened enough to get too narrow, they can't be used.

I bought a set of four 2 1/2 X 12 X 3/8 inch for $15 some years ago at auction. Nice shiny and newly sharpened. They were with a bunch of tools but no planer.

I had to make mine and it was out of a nice bit of tool steel. Only use it for planning cuts as it has a 70 degree skew. With 25 degree bevels.
It has scared the God squad away from my house as I walked down the driveway to see who was ringing door bell!

Thanks I have tried to get some tool steel or blade at 2"x3/8x12 (or 50x10x200) without luck so far.
I want it for planing cuts only (obviously). I know they are about, but as scarce as hen's teeth.
Anyways maybe TT sale to-morrow. There was a guy on the Forum who made turning tools (some years ago), if anyone
remembers those details and can let me know, I could get in touch with them. "Ray..." something? Thanks, Drillit.

Truck Springs!!! There is a place near me that repairs truck and motor home springs. I had read about people making lathe tools from truck springs and went by there and asked if I could buy a piece or two of broken spring. I was told to help myself out of a scrap bin.

I took three pieces and left $5.00 for their coffee fund. One was about 18 inches long and tapered down to a thin edge. It is a most wonderful prying tool for taking salvaged lumber apart. I made a scraper from one. It did fine.

I was walking along a RR track a few years ago and found some half inch thick chunks of metal with pieces broken off. I think they were tips of a machine that the RR uses to cut brush and trees off the right of way. I figured if they were hard enough to shatter they would probably sharpen well enough to cut wood. They are still in the shed, untouched.

Have you tried bohilert, think that is spelt wrong German toolsteel S600 I have a few skews made out of it.

I have 2 skews made from Bohler S600 material. Fabulous stuff, don't know if it is still available and in what sizes. I have had them for nearly 30 years, still going strong. Highly recommended if you can still get it.
