Coles jaws

I want to invest in a set of thes. Looking at the Gary Pye set up which has a flat metal plate style set of jaws
onto which you attach the extension jaws that are made from a herd plastic.

Seems to be good value and I guess there is the advantage of basically having two sets of jaws.The flat metal plate
jaws would act as a stiffener for the larger jaws.

Anyone have any experience or thoughts on these??

I've the Nova set and they are excellent.

Honestly, though, I'm hanging out for a Longworth chuck. Make your own (not too hard by looking at the videos) or simply buy one :)

Very flexible and less hassle than the Coles :)

I have one of those, bought a few years ago as it was cheaper to extent a small set of cole jaws rather then buy a larger set.

I was very impressed with them. The plastic plates extending the jaws are about 10 mm thick strong plastic, with metal nuts embedded for screwing in the set of holding knobs. It came with a set of the holding knobs but they also fit the Vicmark or Vermec holding knobs.

It came with all the screws and a long handled chuck key to fit the Gary Pye chucks so adjusting the chuck on the lathe is easy.

Great bit of kit and well worth having.

I have the Nova mini Cole jaws which have soft(ish) rubbers, Ideal for small bowls etc.
For anything bigger I just screw on 4 bits of scrap wood & turn custom jaws for he job in hand.

I have been using the Vicmarc Coles jaws for about 10 years, I reckon they are brilliant and BIG!!!

Noting that I will hold a bowl with them at the end, it can determine your final bowl shape, would love a vacuum chuck, but they are useless trying to hold a burl (full of cracks and voids).
