Hi Guys

I have a simple Taiwanese 3 speed wood lathe with a basic bed made of two parallel square section steel bars

The bed measures 150 mm across ( side to side externally) with a 75mm space or track between the inner faces of the bars

I have broken the tool rest support where the post of the tool rest fits into vertical hole in the support/ track mount. The original set up looks inherently weak and the casting is very poor quality. I junked it as it was not worth repairing.

Now, you'd think finding a replacement would be easy ?! It is isn't

Does anyone know where I can get a replacement mount and tool rest ?

I'm in Brisbane - I don't have access to a welder

If you think you can help I'd really appreciate a heads up.

Please PM me with info.

Thanks

Dave

There are hundreds, probably more like thousands, of these lathes hidden all over the countryside. You must be able to pick up a whole lathe much cheaper than repairing or paying postage for an online purchase.

Since the post hole broke, and you are dissatisfied with it anyway, there is no need to try to replace it with the same one. All banjo bottoms are flat, so there is no issue as to whether it will fit your lathe. It will, but the only change might be the clamp that locks it to the ways. If it's not the same size clamp as yours, see if your clamp from the broken banjo will thread onto the new banjo. If not, go to a machine shop and have one made to fit. Get one that uses a larger post. All you now need to do is replace your tool rests with larger posts. ............. .Jerry (in Tucson)

Well, I was in Bunnings this morning - guess what - Ryobi have these at $399 350W 970mm Wood Lathe Product Detail - RYOBI Tools (http://www.ryobi.com.au/power-tools/products/details/350w-970mm-wood-lathe) They may look pretty with the new paint job, BUT they still have the same design flaws, and cheap manufacturing issues.

My advice look for a better SH lathe! Plenty of older Vicmarc VL100's, Tough's, Woodfasts, even Record lathes etc about the country that are far better value and much safer lathes.

Mine like that the tailstock broke while was learning to turn. The machine was 4 hours old. Run run run. Make good sander or boat anchor only in my opinion

keep on plugging away

Sorry, but it's weigh tooo light for a boat anchor, all that tubing, it'll float.

It doesn't have to be metal ...

Google "wooden tool rest" for these, and lots more, examples:
