Received my first pen today, from member BDar. Not sure of the kit style, I think it is ‘graduate’ or ‘professor’. The wood is Turkish walnut and it is a truly beautifully figured wood. Thanks for the blank toohttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180202/205bf3caf6ccdea7881d6a962b46bf72.jpg.

Started a pennstate Nouveau Art Deco today with the snakewood. Drilling generated a lot of heat in the wood and was retained for quite a while. Found it lovely to turn chose to use a 2” curve straight edge carbide tool.
Used u beaut Aussie oil to finish, really brought the colours out.

Hey folks -
Very lucky camper on the end of this pen swap!!

Øistein from Norway was my partner and he has certainly made a beautiful writing implements. The timber is teak from a historical ship - the SS Statsraad Lehmkuhl of Bergen (1918). Not only was there history in the timber itself but also in how it was obtained. This was all documented for me along with a couple of pages on the ship itself!!
Housing the pen is a box made with some of the same teak and also cherry. Accompanying the beautiful pen was a swag of blanks - all of which are new to me.

Thanks to the organisers of this swap, it really is a bunch of fun each year and I always look forward to signing up.

Thanks again Øistein, I am very grateful

Cheers all
Gab

That is quite a pack you have, especially the Bog Oak very very old wood. I’ve just purchased a few pieces from the Ukraine that are estimated at upto 5000 years old. Did your benefactor give any indication of age of his? Will be interested to hear about your drilling and turning experience with it.

He mentioned between 3500 to 5000 y.o.
He also said that it won't shave but rather just turn to dust....
Certainly going to enjoy creating with them

Evening Everyone,

Pleasant surprise in the mail this week with my first pen swap turning up with a collection of blanks attached.429989Thank you David for a lovely pen and your generosity. Thank you also for identifying the blanks as I am a wood species beginner. Hoping to return the favour soon but a house move is delaying the process. Hang in there it will happen, besides you Know where I live. Oh that's right I won't be there in 5 weeks time.:D Email and postal will remain the same so I can't hide.
To Pjwri2, I pm'd you my details back on the 28th January and still to receive a response. Just a gentle tap on the shoulder. Hopefully hear from you soon.
Cheers,
Mac

Received my Swap from Terry. A nice collection of blanks some of Terry’s own casting. The pen is a kit new to me, called Spiritual purchased from the manufacturer in China, dressed in Camphor.
As ever great fun and look forward to doing it again next year.
I am having trouble attaching a picture, will keep trying but wanted to acknowledge the Swap.

I received my pen from Simplicity two weeks back and have been a bit slack in posting the pictures. The pen is a Sierra in King Wood and a selection of blanks.

Great work on the pen mate.

Evening All,
Well the house move is almost done. Six weeks of packing, three days of loading and unloading in weather varying from drizzle to moderate downpour. The wood lathe and attached bench took a tumble as I was trying to unload it on my own. I think it survived but the Ozito bench grinder is no longer attached to the bench. Three 4.2 metre pantec loads, 5 ute loads and a box trailer load and it is all at the new home. Already rearranged the shed several times to fit it all in. Still thinking a 3 metre extension and a loft storage platform.
To David, hoping to get your pen started shortly. Thank you for your patience.
Cheers,
Mac

Received my Swap from Sturina last week and have been totally remiss in posting. It’s a beautiful sierra in a banksia nut and some blanks to play with. Now I will try to attach a pic. Wish me luck.

It’s not working.

it defeats me. I’ll try again tomorrow. But it’s a great pen.

Since wedgtail hasn't posted a photo of the pen that I sent him yet, I'll just do it.

The wood is Kingwood. I know there are rotary scrathes, made it a couple a while ago when I didn't put much effort into sanding...
