finishing burls

I am hoping someone can help me. I am after information for my father-in-law who took some burls home with him from his last visit to us. (they were green).
He has since worked on them but was not sure how to:
finish them off
finish the bark so it doesn't fall off.
Can anyone help with any or all info regarding burls.
