1. are they any good?
2. can anyone give me an idea of what a fair price for a second hand one would be?

My second go at this, must have got timed out.
TL1000 is good but quite old if it's the same model as mine.(TL1000)
Check with your local supplier for parts etc.
I'd be looking for something more recent it's sure to have more options.
Good for spindle work, a little restricted by the channel bar for larger bowls etc.You could allways go outboard but then you have to set up.
A pretty good sturdy lathe in it's day.
I run mine with a 2hp motor.
Compare your prices with what's available, but I'd guess between $400 to 600 but I'd expect accesories with that.

If I could I'd be switching over to a flat bed lathe.
Tip, push the tailstock up to the spur drive and see if they align.
I know there are many adjustments but I would be happier if I left with the lathe drives centered.

Be interesting to turn some snowgum burl. Reckon you'd be the only one out there with good access.
