View Full Version : Manufactured "bands"

Zed
17th February 2006, 01:45 PM
I recently got a reddie because I dared to give someone a red who I think deserved it. He got the red because he mentioned that he liked a band called "rogue traders". As you may know they are a one of the new breed of pathetic bands who dont have an original chord in 'em. in fact thier most recent "song" is a blatent plagurisation of "My Sharona".

Mind you the "lead singer" of this "band" who's pretty much at the opening of every envelope in order to stretch her 15 minutes has a nice set of mammalian protrubrences - which in itself is a likeable thing right ?

I like most people who like music are very selective on what is "good" or "bad" thus - they are "bad" and anyone who s over the age of say... 15 deserves a red (methinks).

Anyway in my eyes reputation is for giving or taking according to your personal prejudices. Thus becuase this tosser :D likes a crapulent band I feel I am justified in redding him for admitting it. bad luck I say.

thus to the poll - should those who deserve to be scoffed at be scoffed at ?

Zed, I don't think Harry really took it in the manner in which you intended it. Some of us are more used to your simian ways than others :p

Now you two fellas shake hands and be friends. I'll have none of your nonsense today, it's Friday and I've finally come out from under a dark cloud I've been under all week.

G'day Zed,

I'll agree with you on manufactured bands.

And where is the melody in stuff these days? Just repeated riffs - if any and a constant beat. It's all a POS.

Australia's darling boy from that thing on Ch 10, can't sing something original or write it and he rips a great Aussie song and calls it his song! I think Ted Bullpit should shoot him.

Only the great old bands can perform live on stage. Give me an example of someone today who actually looks like thye're performing live and not lipsincing to their own song? Modonna even lipsincs!

I'll stick to my stuff thanks, Pink Floyd and the stuff from the 80's. Yeah I like some new stuff, but I'm very selective.
None of this current R&B, hip hop POS thanks!

I gotta disagree on the bagging someones tastes point only, If we all liked the same stuff then it would get boring fast.

Music means something different to everyone, wether they enjoy abit of fun, a particular style or can appreciate the talent and quality of a musician. Shouldnt make derogatory remarks about something as silly as Music thats un-Australian!! Unless there a Kiwi then its ok haha ( im 1/2 kiwi so these remarks hold no ground )

Whats currently doing the rounds in my workshop

Chris Cornell - Euphoria Morning
Colin Hay - Going Somewhere (Men at Work frontman, very very emotional music)
Jeff Buckley - Live at Siné (died way to young, amazing artist)
Best of John Lee Hooker 1965-1974 , absolute must have CD with duets with Van morrison is amazing to listen to 2 of the "greats
And a Dean Martin best of 4 CD set from the bargain bin at JB-hifi

But im getting off topic sorry (music is my 2nd passion)

RogueTraders do infact BLOW GOATS

But if shes doing the "blowing" Ill be the goat hahaha

Ok i'll buy that if the disagreement is on whether "Stairway to Heaven" is better than "Livin Livin maid" or that the riff in "hot for teacher" is better than the drum solo on "Black dog"... but c'mon - if you like nana maskuri, or any of the other shyte - you may as well hold up a card to "say my musical taste is aligned with my grandmother / 12 yr old neice" Ie "in me date"

I wouldn't like to get a reddie just because someone disagreed with my taste in music.

I think music has been going downhill since the 70s...

Music is Music, it's Tribal, It's Fun, It makes us smile, dance, tap our feet, fall in love, think & drink to, but that's all it is.
I could recite/sing every song word for word from Sgt Peppers by the time I was 5, knew what Mama Cass died from before Elvis left the building forever, tried to find hidden meanings in all sorts "sagist" tunes in my teens and early adulthood, before it dawned on me, John, Paul, Ringo & George were no more omnipotent than my own father, Jim Morrison had no more insight than Issac Asimov, and to top it all off was Gene Simmons a few years (decades even :o )ago saying to a reporter, "Why are you asking me these questions about world affairs, I'm a rock 'n roll artist, I play Guitar that's all I know" and you Gene are the one true sage of our age:p .
Does it make you wanna dance?, do you start singing along to it?, does it make you turn the radio up?, do you relate to it?, if yeah, right on brother who cares who wrote it, sang it, mixed it, and what it really means, don't over analyse just enjoy my brothers.

The Stones, Sabbath, Zepplin, Airplane, Disco kings and queens
Electrons and new romantics from the eighties, punk, madness, tommy tutone

Balladeers and rappers, ripoffs and readymades, kylies and boybands

All good, it's the rich tapestry of music, to limit yourself to this that or the other is just plain silly, listen to your Kids' music you just may be surprised.
Shame on some of you Blokes, sounding I'll bet just like your Fathers:eek: .

17th February 2006, 09:11 PM
Youre a smart man Bruce.

The Rogue Traders first song with the Elvis Costello riff was fantastic. The rest I dont care for. I like all types of music. If it sounds good then I dont give a toss about how its marketed or who sings it. For mine, I can't listen to the same music all the time whether it be Metallica or ABBA.

Before you flame me Ill bet that very few of you have a CD collection as diverse as mine. A lot of it is because I DJ'ed in a nightclub in the 90's, and the rest of it, because I love music.

I think there is very little totally "original" work out there but really as Bruce pointed out, who cares.

My only red has come from the ape for a post which received two greenies, so what does that say. BTW where can I cash in my points?

Harry72
17th February 2006, 09:12 PM
Well well well, If you dont like rogue traders fair enough but just because I do there is no need to hit me with a red... grow up.
The reason I have taken offence was well explained in the reply to the PM you sent me...

I do fail to see how im leading with my chin, sure post a smart ass reply(I'd laugh anyway) but a reddie nooooooooooo! :p"

Ps, I dont like rogue traders because of the singers tits, I like it because its not some lovey dovey crap that fills the market nowdays, and its the type of music I listen too while pumping weights at the gym(beat orentated).
If you think its a abonimation to the original it just shows you have no respect for taste... they wouldnt use it if was crap in the first place!(they dont use the song at all only parts of the main riff da da dat dat da dat da dat... bah baa bah ba)
And just to set a point straight... Rogue traders are not a prerecorded band with just singers and dancers performing, they are a proper band who do actualy have some real instruments played live....(yes they do have some synthetic parts, just about all do now)
Like shed hand said "Gangsta rap, ordinary rap, gospel, kylie, shyte, madonna, shyte. its all shyte. 50 cent, snoopy dog, marilyn manson, and anyone like 'em...shyte." I definately agree, its not about the music its (mostly not all)pure commercialist synthetic prerecored crap.

That is to say, creativity comes from the spiritual and speaks to the spiritual in us, so we can relate to and be moved by music, art etc even from unlikely sources. What you hear in the music may be worlds removed from what the musician intended, but it's still legit for you.

Thus becuase this tosser :D likes a crapulent band I feel I am justified in redding him for admitting it. bad luck I say.Zed, I suspect you have read the following, but here it is anyway, from the FAQ, verbatim:

"Negative reputation should be given if the person is posting something that detracts from the conversation. If the post is rude, inappropriate, breaks forum rules, is not gracious, etc; these are all good reasons to give negative reputation.
If you have a personal grudge against someone, it is not appropriate to give them negative reputation for no reason. Giving negative reputation because you don't agree with what was said is also inappropriate use of the reputation system. People are entitled to their own opinions, just because you don't agree doesn't mean the user was wrong or not contributing to the conversation."

Really, by giving him a reddie for stating his opinion you probably should have earned one yourself for breaking forum rules on managing reputation.

Bowie's never lost the plot...............he just avoided being totally drawn into the "commercial/mainstream" side of the business and maintained his evolving individuality, consequently, some of his offerings haven't appealed to people.

Every album he put out would have a track or two on it thats good, after all the bloke is pretty special when it comes to music. Heros was the pick of the three for me. Later he done the soundtrack for The Buddha of Suburbia which i loved. But compare all those to Space Oddity, Man hwo Sold the World, the sensational Hunky Dory, Ziggy, Alladi Sane, Pin upps, Diamond Dogs and the very underated Station to Station, the post Scary Monsters are rather dull and ordinary;)

Is this difficult? I have not heard one of my 200+ LP's for 10 years. I was just thinking 'bout setting up the LP12 again - this could make me do it. What's the sound quality like, what gear do you need etc?

Copying from an LP12 to disk is a discrace and you should hang your head in shame for contemplating it. The sound of the LP12 is pure heaven compared to the sounds compressed digital stuff.

Set the Linn up, get a new needle for your cartrige, dust down side one of Darkside of the Moon, dimm the lights, have a little toke, kick back and enjoy an experience that would make an ipod seem like an old 78:cool:

If push came to shove, I'd opt for the 78s;)
