Hi All,

I am chasing some slotted head brass countersunk wood screws. I think that I've tried most suppliers in Western Australia - but it seems that they are an endangered species. (Only Phillips or square head screws appear to be carried in some (most) sizes in Brass.)

Does anyone know where I can get good quality slotted head brass countersunk wood screws, preferably in Australia.

Thanks in advance,
Chris

I have a mate over here in Melbourne that specialises in slotted screws (He restores Vintage cars, phillips head look wrong). Will see if I can find his number

Paul's Mid City HArdware, in Sydney can sometimes get them - depends on what the importers have. A #4 ga. 10mm brss screw with a phillips head????? And they wonder why they strip out.

Otherwise I'd recommend Lee Valley too - quite reasonable prices & easy to deal with. Customs aren't a problem if you're importing less than $1,000 worth :D - just don't get them to ship UPS, who will try to charge you an extra $60 or so just for turning up, as well as the $100 or so initial fee they get thru' Lee Valley.

Chris,
Veneer Inlay Australia/Box Makers Brassware (http://www.veneerinlayaustralia.com.au/cgi-bin/engine.pl?Page=page.html&Rec=307) are mail order from NSW and carry a range of small solid & plated brass screws. You can also catch Michael at the Working with Wood Shows.

Goods & Chattels in Brisbane stock them and do mail order. You can download their catalogues and price lists.

I've been able to get any I need at DIY Shop in Maroochydore and I'd be very surprised if there is not at least one similar store in Perth.

Kind regards
Brian

Hi All,

Thanks for your input and helpful suggestions.

I did find two small packets of screws at Timbecon here in Perth, but they were the last on the shelf and I was told that their current supplier was not providing replacement stock. Extensive reviews of yellow pages and the local grapevine have not been successful.

Have found a number of suppliers in the US on the Web, but would still prefer to do business in Australia if possible.

I'd be extremely grateful if anyone knows of a good source in Australia for Brass slotted head counter-sunk wood screws - in the size range from 6g x 25mm to 10g x 50mm.

Best regards and thanks,

Chris Ball

Hi there,

I am new to the forum, it certainly looks good, and a bit woody too!

Anyway, I too am after countersunk slot head solid brass screws, but my problem, is, I am unsure what size they are...(yes, I am one of those 'woodchuck' dummies with littel experience!).

I know the old hinges will not take a 4G 12mm stand too proud in the countersink for the hinge to close flat.

The original screws I have, but they are steel, and are 10mm in length and are threaded the whole length, and they are thin.

On VeneerInlay, they have a 3/8ths 3G solid brass screw, that is close to 10mm, just half a mill under, but, is 3G the right gauge???

Since I spent two days polishing up the unusual hinges (they have an arm that curves out and slots down into a carved out area in the lower frame of the box, to hold the lid up), I want to finish the box with original looking brass.

The box, which I will post a photo of when finished, if that is allowed here, has been painted and drawn on by my mother, who turns 90 on January 18th 2012.

So, there I am, and I tried corresponding with Michael but kept getting confused by the responses. Basically, I don't want to waste $20- on a bog of screws that do not fit.

HELP!!!!

Take a look at the Lee Valley site in the hardware section - they will likely have identical hinges to the ones you have. Check the price section - there will be a number in a circle agaist each size of hinge - that is the screw size - 4, 5, 6 or whatever.

Strangely, they also sell the screws in 10's or 100's too.

OOPS! :-

I should have stated, but, upon cheking out Lee Valley, they are based in Canada, and I'm in Oz, New South Wales to be exact, and I need these screws quick...

But thank you for replying to my request.

If you know of any suppliers in Australia, in New South Wales, that would be great.

Newby here.
Had the same problem. Needed 4g x 5/8th.
Found them from following supplier : Bronze and Brass Fasteners .com.au (http://bronzeandbrassfasteners.com.au/)
They are good squirrels.
Ordered Monday, should have them Wednesday. Very good service I would say.
Good luck.
