Hi all,
I'm new to this forum and also woodturning.
I bought a set of woodturning chisels(ANANT) and with the help of the internet have worked out what most are for but I cant see any major difference between a roughing gouge and a spindle gouge can someone please enlighten a total newbie?:)

A roughing gouge is "u" shaped and generally ground straight across. It is for spindle work only unless you have a death wish or more strength than Samson.

A spindle gouge is shallow fluted and ground in the shape of your fingernail. These can be used on bowls but a bowl turning gouge works much better.

Go here. Look under woodturning tools and then gouges. All will be revealed. http://www.robert-sorby.co.uk/
