As you can see by the attachment I have just made this timber into a pen. The timber looks great but unsure what it is. Any ideas. I thought it was a type of Gum or Grevillea but recently told it was blood wood. Thought it would make for an interesting discussion.
Thanks

Nice pen Kerry,
56 views of this thread and not a single response.
A tighter photograph might help. I'm on the other side of the planet and
unfamiliar with most oz timbers. If no one else responds try cutting and pasting your thread on the Pet Peeves thread by at the top of the board and post that one of your pet peeves is turning wood of an unknown species. :D
A lot of us have been on a rant there for a day or two.
Sorry I could not help.

That looks like some of the hardwood I got from E.Mac last year.

Give him a post he will know it. If he doesn't know he will know someone who does

Hi Kerrie.
From the photo it looks like red cedar? What part of NSW are you from, and is it local?
Was it heavy and was there any smell coming off it as you worked it.
I concur though, nice pen!:D

thank you. I will look into the red cedar idea. I am from the Mid North Coast. The timber is local. Its a heavy timber. Not much smell. Thanks for the compliment on the pen. I still have a lot of fine tuneing though to get a nice finish on the pens.
Appreciate your response

Bloodwood is darker, has a similar strong figure but also has clear medullary rays.

If you hadn't said 'tis local, I'd have picked it as a Granadillo.

You guys have so many loverly species of woods that we who are blessed with mundane cannot concieve of your fortune, but I do buy exotics and special pieces and I am looking now at a piece of Bloodwood and yours is not that. Rsser is correct in his discription.

Bit hard to tell from the photo but it looks like a Zebra Wood Blank .

Picked up some similar ones from Jim Carrroll about two weeks ago.

Its a light brown wood with black dark Brown stripes running with the grain.
