Turning clubs / etc in Melbourne's east

G'day,

Sorry if this question has been asked before, (a search on the forums didn't show much), but can anyone tell me of a turning club or such in the East of Melb? I'm in the Croydon area and very keen to expand upon my self taught skills on the lathe.

My haunt is the Maroondah Woodturning Club in Ringwood. Small, but cosy.

The "big one" is Nunawading, which Maroondah has links to. Too big for my taste though... who wants to be just one of a sea of faces? :D

I'm primarily looking to work on improving my skills beyond the self-taught level and get some consistency in my turning. I'm confident in that I can get a reasonable bowl, turned box, etc. But I'm still very much following what happens rather than being able to impose my will on the work.

I'm currently practising as much as I can with the skew, which is very much a 'it happens or it doesn't' thing at the moment. When it's working well, the finish is awesome, and I'm streets ahead of anything I've done with a gouge.

A smaller group sounds like the sort of thing I'd be more comfortable with. Are there any people in the club willing to mentor a back shed hack?

I think next Wednesday night is the next club meet, I'll have to check the calendar. You're welcome to come along as a guest to see for yourself and meet the motley crew.

Being a small club, we don't have our own facilities; the meetings are more for demos & a bit of socialising. There's a lot of stuff going on behind the scenes, blokes helping each other out, etc. That's the advantage of the small club; you soon get to know everyone. :)

I'm not sure if there'll be any hand-on next week, I think the schedule is for a talk on old tools by a member of the handtools preservation society. I doubt it'll be one of the most exciting nights, but it should be informative.

First and third thursday of every month at 7.00pm. Come along and try before you join, you will be made most welcome.

Try Forest Hill woodturners- meets 1st and 3rd saturdays (and mondays for those that don't work!!)
Or waverley woodworkers -they have a speciality turning group as well.
