Hmmmmmm........ Wonder if it'll work on an induction motor. Could be a really cheap variable speed for a lathe, scroll saw, etc.

Good post Iain,this is exactly the one I have and paid about $50 Oz for it a few years back at a WWW show here in WA.
Someone had a query about these in one of the forums which I think was Routers and I suggested they try the outlet that I accessed mine thru.
So they are available here in Oz and of Taiwanese construction,but to date I've had no problems with mine as it is fuse protected and I haven't had any troubles at all using it as I do on my router on the router lathe.

I don't see any reason why it shouldn't work on any motor... makes you wonder, though, seeing as most lathe speed controllers cost upwards of a few hundred dollars.

Update: I've done a bit of asking around - I'm afraid it only works on series type motors such as those found in routers and most other hand tools. It won't work in squirrel-cage motors, which are used in most lathes etc.
