Norfolk Island Pine

Evening all.. it seems as if I have been offered a load of Norfolk Island Pine.. has anyone ever used it for turning?

and before any of the purists here tell me that it is not a true pine tree .. I know, one of the "knowlegable ones" I work with gave me a crash botanical course today.

Check out Ron Kent's work at http://ronkent.com/RKgallery.html He turns Norfolk Island Pine so thin that it is translucent. (It's the oil that does it.)

Beautiful work can be turned from the wood. The trick is to make use of the five star pattern of branches that occur along the main trunk. The bowls or hollow forms are turned with the grain running parallel with the axis of the turning.

well I finally got the N.I Pine home... took 2 whole trailer loads to do it....

Damn tree is nearly a weed!!! measures about 500mm (50cm or for doorstop.. 18 inches) across the base..

anyone interested in a piece or three?

SWMBO is not too happy with the buildup of timber in the back yard!....
