View Full Version : Lazy Susan Finishing

I have procured a nice piece of Mahogany and intend to make it into a 450mm diameter Lazy Susan. It is fairly flat and as such will not need to be trued up. My question in regards to sanding and finishing is whether I can sand the slab on my lathe or will this leave circular patterns - sanding will be via hand held paper. Also, if I were to use shellawax cream and friction finish on the lathe, would a circular pattern be the result?
Other finishing proposals and techniqes would be helpful.
Thanks

You can sand by hand on the lathe but tread lightly and keep moving the (good quality) paper. On flat sections use a sanding block. On curved, fold your paper into three. Work carefully up thru the grits; make sure you wipe the surface and check before moving to the next.
Wet sanding might be a good option for you - do a search on "new tricks".
Finish: Danish Oil every time for this kind of application. Easy, durable, repairable. Should be my signature.
[Edit: it's too big for Shellawax; if you're sold on Ubeaut, use Shellawax Cream. 'It won't need to be trued up' - think you'll find it will ;-} Good luck. Exotic mahogany is lovely turning timber. Or are you talking about 'Southern Mahog'? ]

Go with Ern's tips and the Danish oil Happy - you'll never get shellawax flat over such a large area (sorry Neil!)
