I'm in the process of making a longworth chuck and rather than using my good faceplate I was wanting o make one. I went to the local engineering works and bought a 1", 8 threads per inch nut. From what I've read of the Jet lathes this is the correct tread. The Nut doesn't fit. Back to the engineer with my faceplate as a sample and he assures me that the threads are the same. Has anyone else tried to fit a nut to the spindle of a Jet JML 1014 lathe. Thanks.

Thanks Andrew. It is 10 TPI and not 8. I just went and checked my owners manual again and it says it's 8 TPI, but following your example I went and had a look at my chuck and it doesn't show the TPI but it has a "C" stamped on it. When I dug out my old box, a "C" insert is 10 TPI.

So I suppose a 1", 10 TPI mild steel nut would be too much to expect at the engineering shop. I'll have to wait until my next visit to the city. Thanks.

Rod,
It may be worth asking your local mob, they may have something in stock. Or, I recently had a 1"x10tpi nut made for my lathe. Haven't got the bill yet but I don't expect it to be much. Any good machinist could make one fairly quickly.

Forget the nut unless you don't have a 4-jaw chuck.;) Use a spigot or recessed ring on the longworth to fit in the standard jaws of your chuck - that way you don't have to remove your chuck just to finish something off!:D

Sorry about the lousy pic' - -will have to go out in the cold if you want a better one!

Thanks guys, I'll think more on the spigot idea. The reason I wanted to use a nut was to reduce the size of the faceplate. The one I have is about 80mm and if I were to use it there would be a size between the smallest the longworth would take and the largest my other chuck would.
I don't have to tell you what is going to happen with my bowl sizes.
It's gret to have others to kick ideas around with.
