View Full Version : My Sharpening Stuff

I was asked for pics etc of my sharpening stuff, so here goes.

My Sharpening Station and Jig
I build a sharpening station around the older cheapo grinder I have, I'd love to get a Baldor slow speed grinder,
but, I've not convinced myself that I really need one...... yet...

The Grinder and Rests
http://www.ablett.jp/workshop/images/lathe/sharp/sharp_overview.jpg
This is my basic set up. On the left, there is a table type of rest, I use this
for sharpening scrapers

http://www.ablett.jp/workshop/images/lathe/sharp/sharp_front_interchangeable.jpg
There are two rests, one a table type, and the other a bar type.
They can go on either side of the grinder.

http://www.ablett.jp/workshop/images/lathe/sharp/sharp_flat_rest_top.jpg
A pic of the table type rest from the top

http://www.ablett.jp/workshop/images/lathe/sharp/sharp_flat_rest_left.jpg
http://www.ablett.jp/workshop/images/lathe/sharp/sharp_flat_rest_front.jpg
Looks a bit crooked here, but it is level.

The Bar Rest

http://www.ablett.jp/workshop/images/lathe/sharp/sharp_under_right.jpg
I use a bolt and handle to lock the rests in place from under the stand.

The Jig
http://www.ablett.jp/workshop/images/lathe/sharp/jig_leftside.jpg
Obviously handmade, but it works well

http://www.ablett.jp/workshop/images/lathe/sharp/jig_rightside.jpg
http://www.ablett.jp/workshop/images/lathe/sharp/jig_leg_length.jpg
http://www.ablett.jp/workshop/images/lathe/sharp/jig_front_size.jpg
The front

http://www.ablett.jp/workshop/images/lathe/sharp/jig_backside.jpg
The backside

http://www.ablett.jp/workshop/images/lathe/sharp/jig_front_view.jpg
The front with a bowl gouge inserted

http://www.ablett.jp/workshop/images/lathe/sharp/jig_set_length.jpg
I just screwed a piece of wood onto the stand to set my stick out on the jig,
the stick out is about 1 3/4" but it is not that critical, what is important, is that it is the same each time.

http://www.ablett.jp/workshop/images/lathe/sharp/jig_1st_setting.jpg
I do the top bevel first, I have the extension rest marked
http://www.ablett.jp/workshop/images/lathe/sharp/jig_1st_bevel_grind.jpg
You can see the gap at the bottom, this is because I'm only grinding the top bevel

http://www.ablett.jp/workshop/images/lathe/sharp/jig_1st_bevel_grind_closeup.jpg
A close up

http://www.ablett.jp/workshop/images/lathe/sharp/jig_2nd_setting.jpg
Once I've ground the 1st bevel, I move the extension rest inward to the second mark

http://www.ablett.jp/workshop/images/lathe/sharp/jig_2nd_bevel_grind.jpg
Here I'm grinding the second bevel

http://www.ablett.jp/workshop/images/lathe/sharp/jig_2nd_bevel_grind_closeup.jpg
in the close up you can see that the 1st bevel is not being ground.

http://www.ablett.jp/workshop/images/lathe/sharp/bowl_gouge_double_bevel.jpg
This is the result, with this, you can present the tool to the work, in such a way that the tool cuts very smoothly.

Ya right, then we could really see my bandwidth go "Poof" :D

You can go here...........

DoPa (http://www.ablett.jp/workshop/do_pa.htm)

These pages are from a Japanese Do it yourself magazine that took a tour of my shop. the thumbnails on the right the text is in English. The tour was a little while ago, no cyclone and no lathe, but the pics are great, as a pro took them.

Cheers!

PS DoPa means "Do it yourself Papa" ........... ya, I know, stupid name....

Doesn't have to wreck your bandwidth - if you can shoot some footage (and we would be wrapped to see it - wouldn't we guys!), you can send over whatever format its in (Super 8 tape, Hi8, (analog or digital) VHS, Mini DV, DVD etc etc) - we'll do the conversion and upload it for you.

Yes that would be great stu! especially for me as i am getting a bench grinder soon and dont have much cash so i may need to build my own tables/jigs..
It would help me greatly:) also i love your humble dungeon and would love a more dteailed look around..

OK, what would you guys like to see?

I have a Sony digi camera, it takes not bad video, if I set it on high enough of a setting.

So tell me what you want to see, and I'll see what I can do.

Here is a short vid of me welding up some beer racks.....

Stu

Thanks for the piccies.

For someone as intellectual challenged as me, please be patient, I understand how you grind the primary and sconday bevels, but they semm static.

The casting I want to make will allow the jig to pivot the tool along a longitudinal axis to grind the complete arc of a bowl gouge. I may be missing something but yours seem to grind only the extreme edge?

Bodgy, you let the jig and tool flop from one side to the other.

Oneway in Canada has a very good set of vids, better than I could make.

Oneway Vids on Sharpening (http://www.oneway.ca/multi-media/wolverine_videos.htm)

Click on the Vari Grind Jig link on the left (right if you are on a dial up) The video is good and shows how to grind the long wing grind on a bowl gouge. My jig is basically a copy of the Vari Grind Jig, all be it in wood.

OK, I took a minute to shoot a video of me sharpening a 1/2" bowl gouge with the swept back wing grind, and the double bevel I've been talking about that Eli Avisera showed us at his demo here in Japan.

EDIT: The video was edited by Gumby and put on that Torrent thread. Domo Dude!!

Sorry if the quality is not so great, the only video I have is on my digital camera, I think you can get the idea from this.

No great secrets, and I'm sure that some of you do it better and or differently, but I was asked so here it it.

BTW, the grinder I have is not so good, the worse part for me is the wheels are only 1/2" wide, so the surface area for grinding is rather thin, I'd love to get a grinder with them 1" wide wheels  :D

Stu, if you read through our video thread, you'll see how we are sharing these files as torrents. That way, you only really only send out one full copy. I'll download this one now and then put it back up the video thread as a torrent file.

EDIT at 6.05 pm
It's now seeding as a torrent here (see last post)
http://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com.au/showthread.php?p=357104#post357104

I have converted it to Divx format (avi) and it's now only 13MB with no quality loss.

Listen guys, only one of these files has downloaded for me, the Timber Hinge one.

I remove the ".txt" from the file and click it, my Torrent program opens and I get a big red bar for progress.

When I click on details, I get this warning in the log file......

WARNING : Problem connecting to tracker - unknown url type: dht

Any ideas?
