Toni ....

You know you love it :D

ps .. scanned this from a previous Aus Woodworker ... Is this the pinnicle of pen turning obsesiveness ???? Is this what we all are destined to become??

(hmmm .. maybe one that big, segmented with a core would be cool . . .)

Ok, I'll put mine up - but just to let you know, I didn't manage diamonds (though now I recon I could) but as I had never done any segmented work until I saw the July pens (and now there a nearly a dozen 'have a goes') and got inspired.

I did get muli coloured, despite the fact that the purple heart had a crack somewhere in it and every pen I turned it came apart at the same point. Luckily it wasn't deep enough to show the tube, but often it was deeper than my finishing diameter - out with the 'poxy resin!

I still have enough PH and Pist to make one more pen like the third one - with the woody pear. This one came about as I cut the segements wrong on my 3rd set. I was trying to make the pattern repeat after 3 layers, not two, but cut the 3rd one wrong side up and the segments wouln't line up correctly.

So here they are:

29648
two for August

29649

with woody pear

29650
all three.

There have been some very noce entries - sorry I didn't quite get the diamond bit:(

Hmmm... I think I'm going to throw my camera in the bit bucket and send all my pens to Jenny to photo. ;) :D

Nice pens, too. The theme was "Harlequin" not diamonds... they just sorta got dragged into it becuase of the reference I posted, I think. It was more the patchwork effect I was thinking of when I thought of the theme and as far as I'm concerned everybody has managed to do a great job of that!

Even my frankenpens, apparently.

HI Guys, I have a question for you. I am on the the pen shop board too and I have a question do you object to some one printing out your photos for a class. To show what your mind can do when allowed to wander in pen turning. Any objections?
bye
Toni

PS THis is his post
I have been asked to teach a class at Woodcraft on segmented blank design and such. Does anyone care if I print out pic of these and just show examples of what can be accomplished if the mind wanders.

After the exploding pen episode, I turned the Purpleheart blank. Sorry I couldn't follow the theme. Really excellent job(s) done by the rest of you.

these are my pens.

1st pen was meant to have a diamond on the top blank ( 4 triangles )
so it was meant to have a purple heart and redgum diamond in the middle of pittosperum. but that didn't work well.

2nd pen is redgum and purple heart.,
the bottom redgum bit ( 3 segments ) is glued at a different angle to mix it up a bit.

so my themed pen ( diamonds ) is the 1st and my other pen is second and the keyrings are from last month. btw the ph has gotton more purpleish

cheers

Hmmm... my list had:
chrisb691 Fireman Sam djstimber ss_11000 Tassie Boy Lubbing5Cherubs Dazzler Skewpid Sir Stinkalot fxst Touchwood stuart_lees brind0g Skew ChiDAMN!!

A few extras crept in, but the more the merrier. :) I think there's still one or two to come, though... have to check back and see who had irrecoverable setbacks. (I'm sure a couple said their pens went *BOOM* in a big way. :( )

PS: and I've no objections to printing photos of my frankenpens. Even if they're only used as examples of what can go wrong. Seriously!

..do you object to some one printing out your photos for a class...

As this is a public forum, I didn't think you'd need permission, but thanks for asking. No probs from my perspective.

Thanks to all, give yourselves a pat on the back, the results have blown me away.

Cheers

Well I finally got my camera back from my brother. All I have to do now is get home tomorrow arvo so I can take the picture and post.
Have been stuck in Melbourne for the last few days doing a few jobs. Finish one job and then comes the line, Oh why you're here can you do this as well and this to. So one job became 4 jobs. And before you jump on the bandwagon and say that is good cause it will be more money, well there is no charge on these jobs as it is at my folks house

Toni, you should post that group of pen pics at WR, we would all love to see them as they are very well done, and quite good looking.

Wow, you guys are doing some really amazing work. It looks like a bit of competition is making everyone strive for excellent results.

Must be a tricky working on such a small scale.

If anyone is interested, try googleing "samsara cues". These guys make some amazing pool cues using old school techniques.

Look in their cue gallery for some good ideas and patterns that could be applied to pen making.

Cheers, and keep up the awsome work.

PS - Who will be first to built a butterfly design on a pen ??

posting a poll?

DJ’s Timber
12th September 2006, 11:16 PM
G'day Guys & Guyettes

Unfortunately I have been held up in Melb and prob won't be back home till the weekend or early next week. I would suggest you put up the poll now and I will post my picture up when I can get to it. I don't think it is fair on everyone to wait till I am ready.

I will also start a new thread for the October Pen swap with a list of current members and newies.

Anyone else wanting to join can let me know in that thread, which is here
