CROSSES!? After all these problems with simple diamonds and now you want CROSSES!??

:D:D

The sad thing is, I already have an idea and, of course, I know it's going to blow up in my face. This time, I'm gonna have a few practice runs...

the theme is an inlay of a cross

Note - that is cross not curse - there seemed to be a lot of cussin' going last time.

Time for the thinking hat again

Hi Andrew,

Would you please give a little bit more of a description of the theme, please. My understanding of 'Inlay', is something that is set into the surface. I think you mean segmentation, but clarification would be nice.

Now refresh my memory, can we only use these timbers, or can we add to them? I only ask because I can see myself running out pretty quickly with some of the ideas I have in mind. Or is adding more timber cheating (like I did last time  :p )

Andrew!

Timber recieved mate! Thanks heaps, and Im sure your gonna see some pretty cool results.

BTW .. how long has this swap been going for? This will be my third, and have two pens sitting pretty and awaiting a destination.

Oh .. and can I throw my opinion right in the middle here in regards to using extra timber for the swap? NUH !

Ya got what ya given. Use that. Otherwise whats the point of each of the guys sending out the timber? The whole point is to use your imagination to create something from what you have been given.

Ok .. said my peace

Skewpid over and out . .. ish.:D

Skew ChiDAMN!!
6th September 2006, 01:19 AM
I've no objection to extra timbers being added, provided that all of the supplied timber is used first. After all, the idea is to make two pens and should someone become overly adventurous and end up with only enough material for one, well... (Just covering my own butt here. ;) )

You've been in it right from the beginning, Skewpid. :D Anyone with more than two pens already put aside has been really enthusiastic. :D:D

Hi Everyone

Little note on forest oak it is a hard wood and will block up the drill bit when drilling so take little bits at a time and make sure the drill bit is clean froest oak is the one with the fleck through it
rosewood is a soft timber and is the red one
good to see every one has recieved their timber :) :)

I was debating on whether I could take a slice off 2 sides of each blank to get some more shims, say 1mm, or slicing the jacaranda in half. Worry about getting too small and losing the lot. Might have to sacrafice one blank for shims and produce just one pen.

Yeah, that's exactly the situation I'm looking at right now. Took a couple of veneers off the rosewood, now I'm wondering how to salvage it for a second pen. I should've cut it to tube length first and sliced'n'diced only one half.

Isn't hindsight wonderful?

One thing I did learn last month is not making my components too small and numerous! Simplicity (and luck!) is the order for me this month.

Basically, each month someone sends out similar pairs of blanks to all participating members. I believe we've got donor volunteers up to November, but I don't think we've arranged for past then yet. So far, the donors have also nominated some sort of theme to keep it interesting.

So, we all make two pens using these blanks; one we can keep and the other is destined for charity. As yet we haven't discussed what charity nor the mechanism to convert the pens into donations. Instead, we've been enjoying ourselves turning pens. :)

If you wish to join, PM Fireman Sam as he's this months' blank donor.

My blanks turned up this afternoon. This is quite strange, because the carrier pigeons around here, don't deliver on Sundays. Apparently, it must have got lost somewhere (I don't know where...it was lost remember). Seems like the penblank fairey took pity on me, and got them into my postbox.

Big sigh of relief!! :)

Not looking good here for one of my pens. When I drilled her I went bloody cock eye and I have cracked. she is in reglue up now. Time will tell whether this one makes the distance or not. I should have one left hopefully 2.

You're way ahead of me this time, Toni. :) Good luck with the reglue!

I've only just finished my glue-up, now I'm dreading the drilling... if the bit wanders off-centre by even a millimetre my pens are going to look like so much "junk." (Not what I was gonna say, but discretion and all that. ;) ) After all these pens, you'd think I'd have learned better... but do I ever do anything the way I know it should be done?

Bad luck Toni, hope the glue up works Ok.

I was going to try a butterfly (see Purpleheart's pool cue thread), but even with cutting all the off-cuts into 1mm thick and the thin piece down the middle, I only had enough for very small half butterflies:o . I got 2 pens, but nothing special:(

So I glued mine up yesterday... and this arvo took a look at what kits'n'pieces I have in stock before I actually started turning.

Hmmm... a couple of cigar kits... but I've cut'n'glued for 7mm. Still, nice to know I have 'em to hand. Hmmm... [rummage, rummage] Ah, yes, here's the 7mm stock! Lessee... I've heaps of centre-bands for slimlines (funny, that!) a few odd clips and nibs, and one helluva lot of refills. Stocks are getting low, which I already knew, but I can manage to finish this months' swap before re-ordering.

Hang on... can I?

Mechanisms? [rummage, rummage, rummage] Errmmm... mechanisms? [another frantic rummage] Nup, no mechanisms! D'Oh! And the treasurer has not only forbidden any more transactions for this month, she also found the paper trail from the last... "secret" transaction, so even next month's budget is looking grim.

What I'd really like to know is: where's the $$$ from the last lot? I demand an independant audit! Someone's diddling the books! (Besides me, that is. :o )

Froggie? Mate, ol' pal, bosom buddy mine, how's my line of credit?:rolleyes:;):D:D:D:p
