variable speed drive

Have just burnt out the 1/4 hp motor on my Record CL5 lathe (about 15 years old I think).

Rather than just replacing it, I would like to fit a variable speed motor, if possible.

Seem to remember seeing a variable speed head stock for a Record lathe someplace.

Can anyone advise on possible options and rough costs.

There are a couple of options.

Just replace the motor (bigger:D ) and connect thru a variable frequency drive form a process controll supplier.

or buy a variable speed motor... CMG thats C M G the australian motor manufacturer not the truckpeople from the USA or the seller of cheap tools both spelt diferently.
Have a conventional looking motor with a knob sticking out of it that is variable speed.... don't know how good..... in hare & forbes catalogue.
