Hi all. Sorry I have not logged on for a while.
I have been playing with the home video camera and posted a video of turning a Garden Mushroom, i.e. one that is too big to put in the house but looks good outdoors. There is a free download over at http://aroundthewoods.com/mushroomvideo.html

Any comments would be appreciated. On my system it takes quite a while to download (the video is almost a half hour long) but some report it only takes them about 8 minutes. Have fun with it and your comments are really appreciated.

Sounds interesting, am downloading now. Will let you know how it goes.

Have started to download the video. Boy it's a big file  269MB.

Might be a bit to big for alot of the people on here . Maybe Stuart could re-format the code and put it up on the torrents site.

I could burn some copies and pass on maybe?

Sure. Go ahead and give it around in whatever fashion works. I would appreciate a link to the web site. I am working on something for people who do not have burners.

Will see what I can do - looks pretty straightforward to convert being an iso file.

Should come down to below 60MB once converted, - watch the torrent video section (hopefully) tonight. (and will include a link to the website there).

Cheers Stuart, downloaded and tried to convert it, but I got lost  with trying to convert it to watch :o . Not my area of expertise .

Darrell, if you go here (http://www.woodworkforums.com/showthread.php?t=35496), you will find instructions on where and how to download torrents

I started a DL late last night to convert, but got 150MB when the DL "stalled" for about a couple of hours... and I threw up my hands in disgust.

Seeing as how Stu's on the job, I'll leave it to him. :D

Thanks guys for the interest. I will look into the torrent idea as well, especially since the next video looks to be an hour long or so. Does the torrent system allow for some sort of compression? An ISO file is fairly compressed as is or at least this is my understanding.

I think you need to get some other advice on your internet site Darrell. You must be able to use a better format than iso. I can't get Nero to see it, and it seems i can get a player by downloading one but if you want people to watch them, you need to make it much easier.

The torrent system is not a playable format, it's a way of sharing the files. We use avi or wmv files which will be about 200MB for a good quality, 30 minute video. We then use torrents to distribute them. On your site, you just need to have a normal format and I'd suggest avi as one of the best.

Thanks Gumby. The reason for the ISO format is for someone to download it and make a CD that plays on the computer or in a DVD player. More versatility in other words. Maybe I will put up an AVI file as well. Nero is not a viewer in the version I have (Express 5) but a CD/DVD burner. Nero uses a proprietary format (nrg) for its disk encoding but will load iso files and cue as well to produce CD's. I am not sure that Torrent is any better a system than other downloaders but I may set the file for that too. Anything to make it easy to use:)

Typically, if I download an iso file, I mount it to a virtual cd and play it to see if I want to burn it to a real CD. Besides which, I do not have a DVD burner and it lets me use and view DVD's.

Cheers Darrell, I hope you don't think I'm being critical. That is not my intention. I'm hopefully being constructive.

I actually had a play around with some programs and got the idea behind Video Cd's sorted. I've never used them so that's why I figured others would be in the same boat and not understand them well.

I've managed to download the iso file, burn it to a CD and watch it just like you would a DVD, as you said. Then I extracted the dat file from the CD, and converted it back to an avi file. Unfortunately, it's also 250MB, which is just too big for most people to download easily.

I did it again, only this time I cut the frame rate back and have managed to get it to 189MB and still keep the quality, which is very good by the way. To get it to an ideal size of around 100MB, it would need to be edited in parts. Perhaps where you do a fair bit of cutting, you could chop out some bits in the middle of those sections. But I wouldn't do that to your video. That's a suggestion only and entirely up to you.

So, I have the 189MB avi file ready to go on here as a torrent if that's OK with you.

(below is a link to our video thread which will show you what we are doing with the torrent files. I can add yours there if you like)

190MB is still a bit large, I'll have another bash at DLing it and see what I can do. At 30 mins, it should be possible to transcode it to around a 60MB MPEG without losing too much quality.

I guess I'll find out once I have a copy to play with... here's hoping his server doesn't go toes up on me again! [fingers Xed]

I have put Nero instructions up at http://aroundthewoods.com/videoinstall09.html
for anyone who needs them.

Criticism should always be constructive and that is how I took it. This is the sort of thing that is good to know. Surely put it up on torrent. Obviously this is one of the things I need to learn. Afraid it will have to go on the back burner. I have no time and a request for a page on how I turn birdhouse ornaments. As of Sunday night after church I am away for 3 weeks but I am going to try for the page. This video stuff is fun but the next one looks to be about 90 minutes so I will likely put it up in chapters as well as a full CD. Have you used a virtual CD player? It may become another page if there is interest.

Skew is right about it still being large so I've converted the avi file to a wmv file and we are now down to 70MB. :D

I don't know why i didn't think of that last night but it was almost 1am when I finished.

So now I'll put the torrent up in our video thread.

Thanks for allowing us to do it Darrell, I'm sure it will start being downloaded by others today.

No problems mate, I enjoy delving into unchartered waters (well, unchartered for me that is). I now know lots more about video CD's. :D

There are 2 seeds for the video already.

Just as an ending though, a smaller file size like the 70MB wmv file we have created will make your download more attractive to a potential watcher. The smaller the file, the more hits you'll get on your site, which I assume is what you are after. It's just the way the internet is going and if it's a bit hard for the average Joe, he just gives up and moves on.

I'm looking forward to your next effort.;)

I kinda dropped the ball, but I did try. Got the DVD, but getting the AVI from it proved too difficult for a tired brain at midnight last night. Good thing Gumby is playing backstop :)

'Twas a VCD, not a DVD. :D Been so long since I last worked on one that I'd almost forgotten the structure/format. :o To extract the vid it's usually a simple matter to copy/rename the /mpegav/avseq##.dat files as *.avi's and, assuming your SW has all the right codecs, just work from there.

It is nice to be back on the forum. I had a bit of a break from turning, mostly work and kids kind of stuff. Hopefully people will enjoy the video and the web site. I have made a lot of changes and have some more stuff to set up there. However, I will be absent for the next three weeks, or at least mostly. I am on course for my DMin next week and the week following my wife and I go to Thailand for a two week visit with my youngest. She is volunteering in an orphanage there until the end of March. I will get lots of pictures. The plans at the moment include
1) hand feeding a tiger
2) riding an elephant
3) visiting Laos
4) helping at a couple of orphanages
This should be fun. One of the places to visit is known for wood carving. I will report back.

Be careful Darrell, they don't like you feeding hands to tigers.
