View Full Version : Cutting threads into wood without tap & die

This came up in an earlier post, so I thought I'd share this tip.

If you need to cut a thread into a hole, a simple way is to find a bolt of the thread required. Using an angle grinder, cut two slots into the threaded section (on opposite sides), running lengthwise of the bolt. If you cut slightly at an angle you should have a reasonable cutting edge. Cut the thread into the wood in the usual way. Not the best solution, but ok for one off's.

Also works for metal sometimes - if you have crossed or stripped the thread and need to retap but dont have any taps of that size - Lube with light oil and turn in 1/4 to 1/2 turn increments and back off - clean the swarf of regularly.
