G`day guys
It`s been a Very long 16 months but after moving house and having to build a new workshop from scratch i`m nearly ready to start making sawdustand firewood again.
The problem is that the motor and battery of my triton air hood has not survived the forced lay-off so i`ve decided to keep the hood & helmet and hook it up to a pump to pull fresh air in from the outside.
I am having problems finding supliers in this contry of a small air pump(240v)
Does anyone know if these are available in Aus?

There are plenty in the US & Europe but can`t get a hit on the search engine for Aus.

if you are going to be connected to the mains, could you not use a 12 vdc plug pack to run the fan?

I used to use a diaphragm compressor for a breathable hookah air supply for diving.

Might still be available from The Miners Den.

Though the GMC oil-less air compressor might be the bees knees.

Try to find a new or used CPAP machine. The output pressure is adjustable. http://www.entnet.org/healthinfo/snoring/cpap.cfm

I just go this visual image of someone working in the shed with full diving gear on......could work but you might need to ditch the weights and boots:D

You should be able to just replace the rechargeable batteries in the belt pack - the motor is more than likely OK. Open the battery box up, remebering there are more than 2 batteries - some are hidden away - and go to Jaycar
http://www.jaycar.com.au
(or local bricks & mortar equivalent) and get a set of 'D' size rechargeable Ni-Cads with solder tags - they have them in their on-line catalog, but somewhere like Dick Smiths is just a bit down market to have solder tagged 'D''s.

You need to be carefull what you use to pump air to breathe or you can get quite sick....No easily available comprersor is a good idea, besides you don't need high preasure air.

you need a small blower, If the existing blower is ok getting it powered up from a dc supply is a good option.

failing that check out jaycar they have two radial blowers that might do the job.
failing that farnell or radio spares.

The motor and the fan need to be quiet too... the noise will travel up the pipe.
Most DC fans will produce an awfull lot less noise if run on half voltage and they don't mind this at all. the will shift half the air though.

cheers

G`day guys
Thanks for the replies.I already have a aquarium pump i got at auction from a fish farm however the noise coming down the pipe is very annoying and distracting. The original motoris totaled and i wasn`t that impressed with it or the battery life in the first place.
As i have 2 lathes back to back and it is the only place i use the the full hood gear i was really looking to set it up as permanent fixture.
I`ll keep looking.
See Ya
Cooky.

You can buy the whole pack, batteries & motor included from Triton as a spare part for about $100.

I work in the welding supply and can tell you that they are gold plated the easy way is to fit a human breathing filter to your compressor this has a special filter to remove oil and such withh a regulator to supply 2-3 psi to the face shield
good hunting

Just make a box, with a filter on one side and a connetion on the other to attach the air hose too, and then stick something as simple fan, a high volume computer cooling fan would work, they make quiet ones, that do pump a LOT of air. Just find a 12v ac adapter to run it. :2tsup:

If you have a long enough hose, or for that matter pipe, with just the hose attachment over your lathe, the hole fan and filter could be in the next room (keep the pipe as straight as possible, with two 45s on a corner instead of one 90).

I know a Japanese Pro turner here who does this, and he very much likes it.

I wear my triton helmet all the time when turning, the only thing I don't like about it, is I can't smoke my cigars while wearing it

Cheers!

A 12 volt air pump like those used for inflating air beds might do.

Cooky decided to pump air from 'outside' for his clean air solution. In my case I wanted to recycle the air in my workshop...warming up my workshop up here near Mt Lofty in the Adelaide Hills is enough of a challenge during our long winters without constantly pulling in cold air. The reverse applied this summer during our recent record heat wave.

My solution was to hook a domestic air filter unit (an earlier model Sunbeam was one of the few available at the time) to my facemask via a flexible medical quality tube which I purchased from an asthma organisation. I have used this set up for quite a few years now and it works well for me.

Wot Sean said.

Seem to recall someone posting pics of their home-made rig on the web; it used a hair dryer sucking air from outside IIRC.

You'd prob want a mesh filter at the inlet ;-}

What Echidna said - K-Mart have both battery 4x D and 12 volt versions, so almost any camping store will have electric air bed inflators - just take a bit of hose & check that the outlet from the fan is close enough to tape - the nozzles are removeable.
