Toni

A burl is formed after the tree has experienced some kind of stress. Wether it is from disease, insect or possibly simply physical damage. The burl forms as a sort of 'scab' over the area to try and protect the area from further damage or infestation.

There appears to be no one clearly defined cause, but rather many opinions. Damage to the cambian cells is often suggested as the main reason. This damage is not fully under stood ie scarring, fungal infection, beetle infestation and so on.

once again , thanks hugie ,for the URL's
i once heard that burl dust is nasty stuff to breath in , so a good resperator should be used rather than a dust mask ( paper ) some thing about the bactiria in the timber , i took the old farts advice cos he looked about 120 years old ( must be doing something right )

it is illigal in most states to remove the burls so check before the queen gives you a set of PJ's ( i bought mine from www.aussieburls.com (http://www.aussieburls.com) )

I think from memory you can gain a licence to remove in NSW. I had a good look at burls and what may cause it from the view point of growing my own crop :D but no clear answer :~ besides it would be a long time in happening :D
