I purchased a router bit and on delivery I find that it does not have cutting tips (for my triton plunge router) the blade is 62mm long with half inch shank, straight cutter.
Would readers recommend i return cutter .
I feel the cutter is only suitable for planeing.

What sort of cutter is it? Are you missing the "bit info sheet" and not the carbide tips
If you're talking of the thick tips (and negative shear angle) on the end of the bit - associated with good mortising bits - then its a different story. Not all straight bits have this, but they are still generally capable of plunge routing none the less, especially 1/2" bits. What makes them capable is that the tips protude a very small amount (unlike mortising bits with large tips).
