What do I need

I have been thinking for some time now of getting into turning, was thinking of bowls and pens etc but am unsure where to start, what Lathe to go for as well as chuck chisels etc .

Anyway I wont have a lot to spend the wife has advised me that I will have $1000 to spend on stuff that I require (Well to start with J).

I have looked into doing a course but I work week nights and that’s when they seem to be on, so I guess it will be trial and error and see what I can find on the net etc.

So I guess what I am asking is if you had $1000 what would you get?

You won't find any better than what Dazzler suggests. Maybe get them to throw in a couple of bowl blanks too.

i would reccomend what dazzler said....but i would get a supernova2 chuck for $80 more if your budget can stretch for it.

also be warned that if you like pens (you will) it will cost you a couple of hundred every coupla months...depends on how many you turn, and what kits you want and if you buy in bulk or buy a 5 pack a week or something like that.

I reckon that Dazzler has got it pretty right. I started with a similar set up and progressed from there. Be warned though once you have caught the bug there is no cure:D . Fortunately, for me anyway I would rather the disease than the cure. :U

You could do that but then you have to buy another. So why waste your money? By the good set and join a local woody club and get all the help you can on how to sharpen your tools. most of the guys are really keen to help to the point of sharpening your tools for you as a example of how to do it.

The MC900 is as good a place as anywhere to start, they're the bottom end of the price range so they wont break your budget. They have all the necessary just the same as the higher priced lathes.

A good many turners here have either MC900 or MC1100 or an equivalent and they produce some very fine work. It aint the tool but rather the tooly on the end that makes the difference.

Stick around the forum and you will gain as much advise you can handle from some fine artisans. Dont forget this forum is for amateurs as well as professionals.

Willy, these are mighty good suggestions for what you need. Another thing you'll need is heaps of patience. Do some non-project turning to get a feel for tool and wood responses, and expect to make lots of mistakes. The firewood pile is a good source of material for this. Bear in mind you can't learn to ride a bicycle by reading about it; at least it's more difficult that way. Find a club in your area. Working nights needn't be too much of a handicap; many clubs have weekend or daytime sessions, and you'll find that woodturners are some of the friendliest folk you'll ever meet.
