When you've got North Americans buying Vicmarcs, Stubbies and Teknatools, with Oneway on their doorstep, you should be asking why.

what harry said. oneway lathes i think ( i'll check it in a sec) are around $6000usd whereas vicmarc are like $4000usd and nova's $2000. i'm guessing thats why.

edit ...i checked and found this. i have no affiliation with any of the company's in the links:)

http://www.oneway.on.ca/lathes/2436lathe.htm oneway manufactoring site
http://www.woodturnerscatalog.com/catalog/oneway2000.html example$5000 USD for oneway.
http://www.woodturnerscatalog.com/catalog/novadvrxp.html example $2000 USD for a nova
http://www.woodturnerscatalog.com/catalog/vl300.html example$4400 USD for a vl300
http://www.woodturnerscatalog.com/catalog/vb36.html example, $7000USD for the closest i could find to a stubby ( how good do these look )

so i guess theres not much betwwen a oneway and a vicmarc price wise...

It's one of NA best features - abundant choice. It's been a difficult thing to get used to here. When a country is so far away from the rest of the world (shipping wise) and has only 21 million people choice is very limited. But a few minutes out on the surf board or hanging out with good folk puts that into perspective (it doesn't matter in other words). On a side note, I don't know if its cause you all think my accent is cute and therefore put up with me; but I have never met a better bunch of people as I have when I moved here.

I think... were I a thinkin' sort... that if'n I lived in OZ, I'da bought me up one of them Stubby Lathes, steada th' Oneway.
Now.
That said, my Oneway is smoother'n a Rolls Royce, and I wouldn't trade it for anything now.

There is also something about solid cast iron rather than welded steel; it's probably just a mental thing, but i favour the solidity of cast iron (good cast iron, that is).

Al.
does yours ever get dirty ?
or do you polish it.

Heh Heh... Nope, I don't polish it. But I do wipe up all the spills when I finish a piece. Just want Her Sweetness to get the best buck for it when I check out... you know, "Mate, that's a nice one... old Al really took care of it.."... that sort of thing.
And, yep, it sure gets dirty. I'll try to remember to get a pic one day when it's at it's finest...

One day, when the future was looking particularly rosy, I ran some enquiries about Oneways. I was told in no uncertain terms that they were not interested in exports, that they wouldn't ship and there would be no service support. Obviously, I didn't buy one.

I've no idea if this is still the case, but I wouldn't be surprised.

Yup :( - told me the same thing. They told me they're putting all their efforts into Europe.

Sales downunder would be too small to support a retail and service infrastructure.

Stubbies eg are made here but most are sold in N. America. Even though, due to the exchange rate creep the motors and electronics are sourced and fitted locally AFAIK.

No indeed Peter. The Stubby will see me out.

Plenty of shavings flying at the moment ... a 2 horse DC is on its way to vac the floor.

Inching closer to that musk.

I've heard a few, "nup not interested" stories comming out of the states lately.

Seems there is a tendency for some over there to be "not interested" at any price when it come to exporting, particularly to the south pacific.

HMMMM:~

Somewhat UN-enlightened in my book. Transit cost is only one component. Packaging, ship to dock/airport, load in container, and administrivia are pretty much common to all export orders. They need to do a more precise analysis; I suspect that transit cost might not be as onerous as it seems at first impression. In the motion picture business, considering cast, crew, studio and camera rental etc., they say, "Film is the cheapest thing we've got."

I deal with a surplus outfit near Chicago; they don't do any export. I'd guess their main reason is mystery about their sources, so they can't do certificate of origin, or whatever customs requires.

In USA, we have a Department of Commerce. I always thought they were supposed to encourage exports; now their mission seems to be facilitating outsourcing. Bah!

Joe, I wish they'd outsource me 'n the wife! Going to Oz is like my lifelong dream. Too late now, tho'. Don't have the financial resources to make the trip.
Guess I'll just have to look at pictures and daydream about what might have been. (frown)
