View Full Version : Musty Odour?

I have recently done a mammoth job in restoring a not so old cabinet, but never the less, a very neglected cabinet. It was used in an old hospital, therefore the lower 100-200mm of the cabinet was regularly treated to a good wet mop everyday. To make matters worse, the people who purchased this cabinet from the hospital had it dipped in caustic soda to remove the paint, then it was left for several years before they decided to get it restored...

The problem is, due to the constant and relentless wet condition of this cabinet it has a terrible musty odour. I have no experience in removing these odours and have no idea if it is indeed possible, especially under these circumstances, but the owners have asked me to research the subject... So I put the question to all you who know http://ubb.ubeaut.com.au/ubb/smile.gif Can I remove the smell, and if so how??

Cheers

Shane!!

Oh, yes the cabinet came up looking great, ready for a good mopping again!

Had great success removing smell from badly smoke damaged NZ kauri draws by washing out with a strong mix of Arm & Hammer in water then applying a few drops of Sandalwood oil. This wore off reasonably quick (a few weeks) so used our Traditional wax which has Boronia oil as a part the mix. This is still fresh after almost 5 years.

The Boronia fragrance has long gone but the smoke smell has not re-appeared. You could try putting an open packet of Arm & Hammer in to the closed cabinet for a few days to a week. This should draw out much of the musty odour. A good wash down with cider vinegar might help afterwards. At least the vinegar would be preferable to the must.

OK OK for all you unedicated peeple out there, Arm and Hammer is a packet of stuff that absorbs stinky stuff particularly in the fridge when youse spill beer or let the cheese or milk go orf. Tis probly a few ofus should carry some in our pocket.

I hope this answers your questions.

It is available at all good VICTORIAN super markets.

Thanks Ray.
In answer to your question, this is a second marrage for both of us & we have been together for the past three years(yes, living in sin)and work commitment's do not allow either of us time of now. We will have time off in January 2000 if the Y2K bug doesn't get us first.

Damn !

Does that mean I have to go all the way down to lil ole' Victoria to get that stuff?? Geez next thing, you'll be trying to convince me that VB is the only beer good enough to drink http://ubb.ubeaut.com.au/ubb/smile.gif

Damn Queensland!! Why oh why can't I get my arm on a hammer ??? Its just not fair!!

Mind you, I'm still not convinced that using a hammer will get rid of any smell http://ubb.ubeaut.com.au/ubb/smile.gif he he he

Cheers

Hi Shane

Arm & Hammer - BAKING SODA (BI CARB SODA)

Sorry I had to get a new hard drive so couldn't stop the rot before it set in.

They say men come from Mars. I am beginning to wonder if there are any who come from this planet. Doorstop I think you came from Uranis or someone elses. http://ubb.ubeaut.com.au/ubb/wink.gif
