My venerable lathe has a problem. The speed control is by the belt rising and falling over meshed pulleys. One of the pair of pulleys (on motor shaft) has cracked.
Does anyone know if replacements are still available (Techtronic say there are no parts available for this obsolete machine)
Alternatively, can anyone suggest another drive method, I had thought of using a pair of fixed pulleys and a dimmer style control to change the motor speed.

Any help would be appreciated

Im going too be game here if you cant buy one ,make it is it nylon if so get s piece from plastic supplier .If your lathe is still going 1 turn to required diameter (top hight of gear )drill hole for motor shaft then turn two thin washers for ends . 2 mark out the position of the slots then using file dremel what ever remove the waste. check the grooves on the belt too the gear when happy clean up any sharp edges .3 put washers as end caps . As im not there its hard too go through it ive got a similar lathe . PS have you asked ryobi sydney they have a lot of spare parts that arent avalible here.

Dimmer control would not be practicable as it could not handle the power. If you go for a fixed pulley then the driver needs to be much smaller. Then fit a VSD or electronic variable speed control, also 3 phase is the way to go. The you can step up the Hertz to gain the speed you want but still maintain the power down low because of the mechanical advantage supplied by the small driving pulley.

Failing that have a go at getting it TIG welded. It might be successful, as its already stuffed it might not do any harm

Are 'Techtronic' the same as Ryobi Australia? If not, try contacting Ryobi rather than someone who would rather sell you a whole lathe than a part.

If no luck there, you could try someone like Hare & Forbes, Blackwoods or a 'specialist' supplier of pulleys or machinery parts in the Yellow Pages - multi-stepped pulleys are - or were - quite a common method of controlling speed - you will need to be able to tell them the shaft diameter plus the sizes of the pulley steps - it is likely to be pretty much a standard part for things like cheap drill presses and the like.

If you are handy with a soldering iron this kit may be what you want.
I was told Jaycar sell it.
(But if they do sell it, negotiating thier online catalog takes more patience than I'm capable of applying to the task)

My Friend,

Your suggestion of contacting Hare and Forbes was brilliant.

They actually sell the same lathe themselves, known as the HAFCO Woodmaster W382, or WL-18 WOODLATHE, factory model MC900.

There is also a full exploded parts diagram on their website under the SPARE PARTS button on the Home Page.

Thank you for the suggestion

Happy to see that you have solved your problem.
I have seen this thread only now that you "bumped" it, but just in case you have not bought the replacement yet, and the crack is only on the shoulder of the pulley and not the hub, I have seen once a broken shoulder reattached with 2part epoxy. Light turning off of the excess and you could not tell the difference. Ran successfully in an industrial setting.
FWIW.
Cheers
