These are the first two Ornamentals I have done. Finished the image with semicircles on the edge 2 days ago and finished the one with circles in circles on the edge today....

Hope the immages come thru OK

Looks good, Ken. Nice to see some action on this forum. What kind of wood are you using? Looks a bit like cherry.

The turning with semicircles on the outer band is Poplar (also call a Tulip tree) and
The turning with circles inside circles on the outer rim is Hard Maple

The Nova OT instruction manual says "dont leave the turning and return to the lathe later" you will loose track of your indexing and mess it up...... YUP!! I concur! :=-}

Ken

Now I gotta clean the shop so I can find the tools........

Yup. You'll also find that most woods will move after turning, and the gravity assist from leaving 'em hanging on the lathe doesn't help matters any.

So, if you come back after a couple of hours there'll be times you find everything is out by a few mm even if you do remember where you are up to! :(

I have been rebuilding cabinets havent had as much time for OT this week but here is quicky project for my coffee cup....
Made out of scrap Poplar

It is 6" in diameter and the outer ring circles are 3/8" diam and number a total of 24

The inner circle is in relief and has 1 and 3/8" diam interlocking circles totally 5....

It was a quick fun thing...

I am reading Mr. Holtzappel's book and tryinmg out some of his ideas.... It is a fun way to learn....

wow! i want one NOW! looks cool, is it a whole machine by itself or in the pics in looks like its attaches to a standard lathe ?

looks like it would be easier than finding or building a rose engine..

Check out the website John.

It's an attachment .... some limitations on what it'll attach to though.

I'd love to have one, but that'll probably never happen.

Which is why I'm building my own rose engine. At the current rate of progress, I reckon I'll have it finished in time to start decorating my coffin...

(Maybe I should look at investing my pennies in this Teknatool toy instead. )

The 'darksiders' talk about a coffin smoother; make your own analogy ;-}

yes i checked the manual

http://www.teknatool.com/products/Specialised/downloads/ornamental_manual.pdf

very funky piece of kit, its handles the M30 thread for Oz, very kind of them..looks like it's kinda designed to fit a Nova3000 lathe (funny that)

This version is designed to be used with our Nova 3000 Woodlathe. It is not designed to fit,
nor should it be used on any other lathe type or brand.

ho hum...

Can't remember where I read it in the welter of guff John, but they did say the screw-on cutter was only available in one and a quarter by 8. Perhaps this is only for the US market; don't know.

Funky it sure is. Not my cuppa char tho.

1.25x8 seems to be more or less standard for their chucks, as that'd be the largest needed. They have adapter inserts to fit almost all smaller headstocks. Unfortunately, they have no adapters going the other way, which is what you'd need to mount existing chucks on the contraption. Can't much blame them for peddling their chucks, I guess.

No reason I can think of that would prevent a machinist making a reverse adapter: 1.25x8 inside, your thread outside. For most, this would be a longish necked-down affair; although it'd increase the cantilever to your chuck itself, side loading probably isn't severe enough for concern, as long as feed rate is kept low.

the manual says its supports M30, i guess when they ship specific units down this way..

SPECIFICATIONS
Spindle Thread: M30 x 3.5 pitch RH (Australia, NZ, Europe))
1 1/4" 8TPI RH (USA, Canada)
Spindle Height Above Bed: 200mm
Index Plate: 24, 72, 96 Divisions
Cross Slide Travel: 165mm
Top Slide Travel: 165mm
Circular Cutting Frame Diameters: 0 - 55mmI checked the Teknatool lathes on Crarrols supplies and is says they only come with the 1 1/4 8TPI but like Joe says an adapter should not be hard to come by..

the FAQ on the site says that both OT use on alternate lathes and various spindle threads are supported

Australia and America have different spindle threads on the Technatool lathes I think.

Metric in Oz, Imperial in US.

that is correct for the older lathes but because of pressure from the yanks all the new lathes come with the 1 1/4" x 8tpi thread.

It was one way for the kiwis to cut production costs by having only one thread spindle to make.

Jim, does that mean I would need to run the Teknatool chucks or get an adapter if I wanted to run my M30 insert chucks like the Vicmarc ones or get a 1 1/4 insert for my other chucks or change inserts if I wanted to change to sawp chucked work form one lathe to another ?

Am planning to buy a mid sized lathe later in the year and cos of the OT attachment have just changed my mind from a Vicmarc to a Nova DVR 3000...tho it may change again before purchase ;-)

It seems Wivamac also has an OT atachment similar to the Teknatool one http://www.toolpost.co.uk/pages/WivaMac_Lathes/Technical_Specifications/Ornamental_Turning/ornamental_turning.html looks pretty solid but may be more expensive than the NOva one..

I been reading this through. Reading about the different threads. So does this mean the thread on the nova will be different to that of the ornamental turner? Jim do you need to buy attachments or should it fit onto the nova 16-24

thanks Toni

At the moment I am assuming they will come out with the 1 1/4" thread so will fit straight onto the DVR and N1624.

For other lathes they will need adaptors.
