Here with a red mallee bowl I turned recently, question for all you aussie turners of red mallee, what do you use to seal the timber to stop the beautifull red colour of this timber from darkening to almost black.

You do it by treating them as attachments. The details are here (http://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com.au/faq.php?faq=vb_read_and_post#faq_vb_attachment_explain).

I have to echo the sentiments of t'others. Very nice stuff, although I am wondering a bit about just what such nice samples of our timbers are doing over there instead of here. :D

I can't say I've had any problems with Red Mallee darkening... but it's not one I've had much to do with, Brown Mallee is more common where I am.

Many of our timbers darken with exposure to light though, much like Purpleheart does. The only "fix" I know of, besides keeping 'em in a dark room, is to apply a UV-resistant PolyU, something like Marine Spar Varnish. I don't like the feel of PolyU's and Varnishes on turned items though, preferring oils instead.

One day I'll find the "perfect all purpose finish"... and then probably croak it the next.

Nice work Zed!

Personally, I like the finish & feel of good ole EEE & Shellawax! (Pay me later Neil!)

I have used danish oil too - but still prefer the wax finish on Red Mallee

Here is one with EEE + Shellawax - the natural edges are simply done with shellac. The "windows" are filled with clear resin. http://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com.au/showthread.php?t=10992

Keep looking after our good Aussie timber over there Zed!

Hmm had that problem myself in the past. My main culprit was the stuff I was using to finish off.

What I use now is the clearest and thinest sealer I can find its the first thing that goes on after sanding. The one I use is by Floods a local Aussie company. It penetrates and dries from the inside out according to the blurb
http://www.floodaustralia.net/products/penetrol_woodoil.htm

Dries in about 30mins and so far its been a success. It has one annoying factor of going off in the can, have been meaning to ring Floods and get some advise as how to prevent it.

This might not be your answer, cos I dont know if they export..:C sori :U
