View Full Version : Rocking chair #2

Wongo

Yes I have been busy again. Having built my first rocking chair the second one seems a lot easier.

This time I am making a few changes. I am going for a slim look. The arm-rests are smaller. The back is higher. It back bows forward to give more shoulder and head support. The rockers are rounder.

Show-off.

Looking forward to see the rest of your "improvements".

Isn't the Powermatic a great toy!

Wongo,

That looks very elegant. But keep going - I ran out of steam after building five rockers, but none were as good-looking as yours.

Looking good, Wongo.
Did you make the joints for the front leg the same way as #1, or have you found a new method?

Wongo, your #1 rocker so inspired me that I have started my first one. Mine is going very very slow. I went to sleep many times thinking about the 'wongo rear leg joint'. You are the man!

A-hah! Looking good, definately a finer look. I think that eliminating the back slats was a bit extreme though! This must be the new season 'see through' look! :p

you da man #2! I like the more slender lines, and the highlight in the rockers. Sweet.

BTW how do you make the time for all this ww? 2 chairs in 3 months - awesome. With her working 2-3 days, kids life saving twice a week, swimming lessons, visitors, work, etc etc, i've hardly touched a tool in 3 months.

The wife is busy with the children all day. When they go to bed it is her time to be alone. So I go to the garage.

In my case, she is busy with the kids all day and when they go to bed she wants to talk...mention that I'd like to do some shed work and I'll be shot....

Love the variation. A much more elegant and feminine version of the Malouf style.

So Wongo, what timber are the slats made from? The rest looks like Blue Gum as in the first rocker.

Wongo, I am curios to know what type of glue you are using.

Spotted Gum

Wongo, I am curios to know what type of glue you are using.

I use titebond II to laminate the rockers and 2 parts epoxy for the joints.

Scott,

I am surprised that you used PVA for laminating the rockers, in view of its tendency to creep. I hope this will not turn out to be a problem for you. I have always used urea formaldehyde or epoxy for bent laminations.

I spent the last 8 days sanding the chair. (80 grit, 120, 220, 400 then 800) Today I put a coat of thinned polyU as sealer. When it is dry I will sand the whole chair to silky smooth then apply the oil finish.

Amazing stuff. Lovely flowing lines, top notch craftsmanship, and lovely finish

just one minor point is the L joint between the front legs and the rockers. Seems a bit stubby somehow...maybe it would look better if the rockers continued out in front a bit.

Conratulations on a beautiful chair.

Another top job. Love the delicate curves. The rockers flowing out the back look a bit like cat's tails.

Is it time for dinner?

Zenwood,
Thanks for your feedback. The font leg-to-rocker joint is the only bit I don’t like about Maloof’s rocking chairs. The way he shapes them is very clever but I don’t like it. This is my first attempt to alter it. I still don’t the answer for it but I will try to do better next time.
