Introduction

Hello All

I have been enjoying reading what everyone has been up to in the posts as I've been lurking quite a while but decided it was time I came out of the closet and introduced myself:D

At present, I live in Darwin, and have for over 20 years, but that will change later this year when my hubby and I start travelling Australia continuously in our motor home.

Turning became my addiction just over 6 years ago. I haven't specialised in any area, instead I turn what I like so my pieces range from bottle stoppers, pens and pencils through to large vases, bowls and platters under the name RAM NT. I've been fortunate to sell some of my work through the local galleries but most goes to family and friends. To me, there has been nothing nicer than to give one of my pieces as a gift on a special occasion.

We have a wide range of woods available here in the Territory, some quite soft, others very hard, and so I haven't had to specialise in that area either, which is very fortunate !!!! Sometimes I let the wood guide me in my designs, be they simple forms or decorative pieces, so that their full potential can be exhibited. At other times, I go through the full process of drawing up the finished piece, which is the biggest challenge of all for me, considering my drawing skills are very limited :)

I attend a turning workshop here almost every week to expand my skills [and stretch our resident turner], but I'm totally set up at home so can take on whatever challenge appeals there as well:- Once we're on the road, going off Saturday mornings to the workshop will stop [and I'm going to miss it dreadfully], but we're designing the trailer to take my workshop along so I won't have to give up turning !!!!! Perhaps I'll get the chance to touch base with some of you other turners in my travels, I certainly hope so, in the meantime I thought I'd get more involved in this forum as what is happening here is inspirational :q

Welcome to the madhouse Robynmau. I'm also picking up a lot of knowledge from these very wise people. I've been dabbling in both turning and cabinet work for a while, but of course, never get enough time to finish anything.

Hope you continue to enjoy the forums, now that you are "out of the closet" and look forward to seeing some of your work.

Are ya gunna hitch a dam trailer to that god dam motor home for da lathe just in case ya need to get a bit of a turn on da way :oo:

Anyway when I was at my last turning lesson on Sunday the wife decided to go shopping thank god it was only window shopping I got home about 5hrs later and the wife has decided to sell the house bye a Winni that she had just seen and go around Australia.

Totally dumbfounded all I could say was do you like the mallet I just made :doh: I didn't get a very good response as you could imagine.

Anyway good to see another turner on the board.

I have heard of a chap who travelled around Australia with a Jet Mini Lathe in his boot.

Good to hear from another Darwinian or should I say soon to be ex.
The last Darwin woodturner who took a mini lathe on a six month around Oz caravan trip never used it but I'm confident Robyn will.
For those who don't know Robynmau, she loves doing TALL woodturning and is one of the better lady woodturners in Darwin.
I wish you the best on your trip and hope it all TURNS out.

As others have hinted, love to see your work. From Jeff's post it sounds like you'll be another newby to the forum that will make us all feel like beginners. Perhaps just me, but there been quite a few newbies lately that have blown me away. That's Ok though, the more ideas we can use.

Some have asked to photo's of my work so I thought I'd just a few as I have to do some work on reducing the size of most of my photos. I'm heading off to Queensland tomorrow for a holiday but will post some more when I return.

In response to individual questions:

HH I'm hoping to have access to the forum while travelling, but really, we'll be depending on Telstra Next G having as much coverage as they imply - we're going west first off so will be quite remote for that time. We're getting wireless broadband and mobile phone so we're doing our bit. Don't know how I'll manaage being cut off from the turning 'world' if it doesn't work out :cool:

Wow WillyInBris lucky you !!!! Are you going to take a lathe? I can't wait to get on the road, if you get to Darwin you will definately need to touch base with the Darwin mob - very friendly, love a chat and a nice quiet drink or three:2tsup:

Our trailer, still in the planning stage, will hold our 4wd and my workshop, also anything else we can jam into it, so it'll be multi purpose, but as far as I'm concerned the workshop part is the priority [no surprises there] !!!!

And John H and cheeky Jeff, the lathe will definately be out as much as possible, not tucked away at all as I have been working towards getting good enough to earn pocket money from selling my stuff:q

Neil, if being addicted makes a good turner, I'm possibly there but I like doing different things all the time, so I still consider myself a beginner in lots of ways. The variety of things I can do on the lathe has been something that's kept me interested and continually learning. There are definate areas I still want to touch on, but you can only do so much. I do hope to share some of my experiences through this forum but also I've been reading the posts for hints and tips and look forward to continuing that as well:B

I was wondering how long before you started posting in this forum:). When you do leave on your road trip you will be missed up hear that is for shore but it will be good to know that we can still keep in touch and give you all the gossip. A great adventure in the making. I'm certain you will enjoy. Posting a travel plan could allow you to meet some/many BB Members, and perhaps learn more from their local knowledge .......... and just think of the cost saving if they invite you to share a BBQ.

The winibango AND a workshop trailer?... mmm Im seein a road train winibango hooked to at least a 20ft trailer hitched to a car trailer hitched to a boat trailer (you do have a boat dont you? oh stoopid me of course you do your from Darwin! :doh: ) but seriously... the trailers gonna have to be seriously modified so lets see if we can get these yobs mushy stuff happenin to help you there eh?

Right so you want the car and other stuff on it as well as the lathe timber chainsaw cicular saw bandsaw etc right? okay so that will have to be the last 10ft {better be a small car or were gonna be in deepshyte!} the front section will be devoted to the workshop okay? remember weight over the axles fellas!

Soooo given Martrix and a few other technogobs are into that sketchup program thingy I will leave it to them to sort the details
