Spraying varnish

I'm new to spraying. I've bought a spray gun and compressor but have not been able to get a consistant finish with it using clear varnish.
Is there magic trick or do I just persevere?

I don't know anything about Varnish, but my guess is that you will need to thin it down to spray evenly. From what I do remember about varnish is that its thick for brushing ( I remember that from school http://ubb.ubeaut.com.au/ubb/smile.gif so times may have changed )
Also could be the setup of the gun. Everybody sets there guns to there own liking.
I don't like to much air, only just enough to get good atomisation of the lacquer.
And I only have enough fluid coming out to cover the field of spray evenly. Could even be the fluid tip size. Theres alot of things that could be causing your problems. But see what others say here and go for it... http://ubb.ubeaut.com.au/ubb/smile.gif
Probably best if ya can find a friend that knows to give a ya a run down and maybe set the gun up for ya so you have a general idea and then work from there.....

You say you are spraying varnish. But is it really varnish, or is that just what you are calling it? What is the name of the product? Maybe it is polyurethane or a lacquer or even shellac. I am not trying to sound like a clever Dick here but often a novice to finishing will call pretty well everything varnish when in fact it is not.

I could be wrong because I never go looking for it, but I would think that in Australia today you would be pretty hard pressed to actually buy "varnish". If we know what exactly you are using it may be easier to help with your problem.

Let us know the manufacturer and type of finish and there may be more helpful info to follow.
