Frame Cutters

I have been all over the internet looking for profiled cutters for the ornamental frame cutter. I found a lot of web sites that show ornamental carvings and how to make ornamental lathes, but I have not found a place to buy just the profile cutter.

I did find 3 frame cutters with a profile cutter, but they cost $350 US and up. I have the motor and ability to make the frame cutters, but I lack the cutters.

Can anyone tell me where to purchase profile cutters and or small fly cutters with a 1/4" shaft?

I have included a picture of the Fred Armbruster frame cutter that sells for $450 US.

I don't quite see how you use the device in the image to cut a profile. I presume from the image that the brass part is a (double ended) pulley to redirect the round belt to spin the profile cutter.

If this is correct then how do you obtain a profile on a turned item, except on an edge. Judging by the photo, the profile cutter is spinning horizontally and the turned item is rotating in front of the profile cutter?

Anyway, you need to obtain either some silver steel aka drill rod, that can be machined or ground to your required profile, then tempered to create a cutting tool.

You could try an engineering supplies shop to obtain some HSS tool steel, usually square and this can be ground to suit your profile.

You are right about a round belt that goes over the brass pulley and the around the profile cutter.

As far as I can tell there is a flat cutter tip or a round insert depending on the cutting frame that fits to the profile cutter.

I don't feel like I'm giving a proper description of what I want.:(

The cutter frame with a spinning profile cutter is used against the piece being turned, but the work piece is not spinning but moving in and out & side to side in order to make the shape. The cutting frame can be turned 90 degrees to obtain a different cutting plane.
