Just completed it Monday night. Was looking for a use of a bunch of cottonwood that I had lying around. I turned this 2.5" dia by 5" tall HF (including finial) and it looked boring. So I dyed it red http://www.forums.woodnet.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yellowbiggrin.gif. Picture really doesn't do it justice. Sanded to 400, dyed then sanded again with another coat of dye, sanded to 600 with 4 coats of blond shellac, each sanded with 800 then 4 coat of poof can lacquer, each coat sanded to 1000.
Our local cottonwood turns terrible, stringy and lotsa tearout. I turned this with a very sharp skew and still had a little tearout anyway, but I know that it can be turned but not as a very big bowl.
Way too much work for the product you get.
I'm starting to like this dyeing, look for more experiments .
Comments , good or bad are welcome.
