I've been nagged into showing these two pieces  so here they are, warts'n'all.

The first I had major problems with, which I asked about in these fora. (Forii? Forums? This place. :p) This is the finished result; the goblet's Redgum, the grub was turned from Lignum Vitae with Ebony and Corian inserts.

The second is good ol' River Redgum, with Corian petals, which were turned, then hand carved and glued in place.

They were actually turned for the Aust. Woodturning Exhibition, but I left my run way too late and didn't have the time they really needed for finishing properly. :- So I knew they weren't prize winners even before the show opened... could've been a bit of an embarrassment, really, but the fact is that I'm happy with the idea behind 'em and they were fun to make. I was going to refinish 'em after the show finished, but I've decided I'm happy with them just the way they are.

So colour me Rustic. :p

Marvellous stuff Skew :2tsup: Excellently executed :U So did you end up turning underneath the petals as per your first post or do them separately and glue them on????

Having seen these whilst they were being made, they were amazing then. The finished product just blows me away, the second one particulaly. How does that thin stem hold up the goblet.

Skew you have excelled yourself again... Two more amazing designs brought to you by the "House of Skew"

These are both extra amazing. Lots of patience here, and very bold concepts. Cute bug. And even the unseen (+/-) bottom of the second has features. You've really raised the bar, Skew.

Thanks for the nice comments fellas. :)

Has the little grub got a bit of tape across it's mouth? A bit of a noisy critter is it? Great work:2tsup: Is Corian an acrylic is it?

Yeah, I think Corian's an acrylic. It's 100% synthetic anyway, used for kitchen/bathroom benchtops. The name "Corian" is actually the brand name of a company that makes it... it's a bit like calling paint Dulux.

So did you end up turning underneath the petals as per your first post or do them separately and glue them on????

The corian petals were made separately to the goblet, then glued in place when finished. It was a bit of a challenge, because my Corian scraps are only some 12mm thick. 'Twas a case of making a segmented bowl of about the right size, turning a profile, then cutting it up and carving the individual petals.

It'd have been easier to just carve 'em from the word go, but turning first it standardised the pieces so all were about equal in size/shape for carving (I'm no carver so I need these "assists" :-) and, of course... I like turning! :)

How does that thin stem hold up the goblet.

Thanks Gra. If you look very, very carefully at the photo of the upside-down one, at the stem between the two thorns, you may spot an accident I had while packing the pieces for transport to the expo.

Believe me, a lot of cursing and foot stamping quickly ensued. Even after repairs, I was dreading it being unpacked at t'other end in two pieces again.

Errmm... I was wrong. A quick google shows that Corian is an "acrylic polymer" (score one to me :thyel:) but that it's a registered trade-mark of, and is solely made by, DuPont. (one point forward, two points back!)

With the comment about Dulux, I came thaaaaaat close...
