To 3Landerblue,
A jointer-planer are the are the same, used for planeing the face and edges of timber. A jointer with a resonable length table will give you ,if used properly and with blades and tables set perfectly you will achieve a straight face or edge of your work.
A thicknesser will plane the other face of your timber to give you a uniform thickness to the timber.

a jointer, often called a buzzer in australia is to put a face and edge on your stock. then you put it through the thicknesser to get a uniform thickness. if you dont have a face and edge on a board before you put it through the thicknesser you will find it wont be perfectly square.

Thanks for those explanations, any ideas on models to chose from and cost of each?

Do a search in the archives. This has been covered in depth several times.
