A ball is, by definition, spherical. "spherical or nearly spherical body or mass"

Hence one could deduct that a game of football involved the use of the foot and a spherical or nearly spherical body or mass. I see this kind of game played at times mainly on SBS.

What I see on other channels, under the heading "football", is a lot of crazies, mainly using their hands to engage in a contest over the posession of a testicular shaped object.

Anyone suggest a name change that more accurately describes the contest?

The word "foot" in football derives from the fact that the game is played on foot rather than on a horse. Its origin is probably the distinction between foot soldiers and horse soldiers. The use of "foot" does not relate to the way the ball is handled (footled?).
As to the shape of the ball.
Until Port Adelaide win the Premiership, at the end of September, it stays as it is. After that, you can do what you like with it.

Back in Tom Browns school days, he was invited to play soccer.
Having never played the game before he asked his sports master the object of the game.
He was told that he was to get the soccer ball (round) from the centre line to between the goal posts.
The whistle blew and Tom Brown picked up the ball, ran down the field and placed the ball between the posts.
He asked the master what he had to do with the ball now and hence the shape of the football as we know it now, and the game of Rugby was invented.

I thought it was William Webb Ellis. At least that's the name of the trophy that will be fought over come the world cup in October.

Testicles are balls.

Don't get hung up on the shape. They're still balls!!!!

Whether they're spherical or oval, for the purposes of football, they're balls.
